Bull Reds

How do you guys catch bull reds at Calcasieu?
Have only caught 20" max. and a few flounder.
Dont know what im doing wrong.
Using those dead bait shrimp from Calcasieu Point store.
Steel leader on braided 60lb test. Also tried Gulp shrimp with some success.

wiers when the water is right

Rookie Redfish 07-14-2011 11:53 AM

Ok. But where are the wires?
I usually go to where the water opens after you take that left where the big boats are docked.
Not sure where that is.
Just have a 15ft bass boat.

choupique bayou has some bigger reds. lots of success there when waters right. biggest landed was 26".... all between 20-26"

The jetties with live mullet on the bottom. There are a bunch of gaft tops but the reds are there.

Crab at the Jettys.
Just be ready to fight some big arased Drum too.
You can catch some 30 and 40 lb. Reds and Drum at the mouth of the jettys.
Go outside the West side of the jettys, just outside the rocks on an outgoing tide.
Remove the crab shell, break in half and use half a crab on a good sharp hook, on the bottom.

They have huge schools in the lake right now....busten all over....just look for them.....Bastards come across the reef we was on this week and clean us out...I hate redfish....

Rookie Redfish 07-14-2011 01:10 PM

Cool.
thanks for the help.
But is there a map or something to get to these Jettys??
I tried to go from Calcasieu Point to the Gulf and almost ran out of gas.
Went straight down the shipping channel. Kinda far. lol

Trailer your boat to the Cameron Ferry launch to fish jetties or drive down to Holly Beach and surf fish to chase the large rubber lips.

Rookie Redfish 07-14-2011 01:47 PM

Ok. Duh!
I just figured out that the jetties are those rock jetties at the bottom of the channel.
Right where the boats come in.

Ray.... 1....2.....3

I am not sure if this launch is "open" due to the tempory ferry that is being used now.

There is a public launch on the East side of the ship channel out closer the the Jetties.

When using the boat launching down in Cameron......be careful of the big waves the large boats can make. A boat tied up to the small dock can get damaged if a big waves hits the boat. Also slippery seaweed on the boat ramp can be a problem getting back up the ramp.

The ferry landing is closed right now.
