WHY???

Accident
Search under way for 11-year-old girl missing in Shell Beach boat collision

Advocate staff report
Coast Guard personnel joined state and St. Bernard Parish authorities in searching for an 11-year-old girl who went missing after a boating accident near Shell Beach on Saturday.

The Coast Guard received a call from the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office around 5:40 p.m. that two boats collided about a half a mile north of Frank Campo’s Marina near Shell Beach, according to a news release.

The girl was ejected from a boat in the crash, the Coast Guard release says.

Officials said she was not wearing a life jacket at the time.

Crews were using a helicopter and 25-foot boat, among other resources, to find the girl, the release says.

Agents from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and deputies with the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office also joined in the search
Why was an 11 yo kid not wearing a life jacket while under way???:pissed:

Put the parents in jail!

eman 07-17-2011 07:54 AM

Just saw the news ,Two boats collided in the shell beach canal almost head on???
One boat had 4 young girls in it . they were all thrown from the boat .
A third boat rescued 3 of the girls. driver in serious condition in hospital.
The canal in that area is straight if i remember correctly.

southern151 07-17-2011 08:25 AM

Yep, that's a pretty dang straight canal. Unreal the amount of stupid stuff taking place on the water these days!!! Uneducated drivers on a straight away collision course and no life vest on a child?! Two situations that are too late to correct but way too easy to avoid!

fishinpox 07-17-2011 08:35 AM

Man that's sad some people have no business having kids , no lifevest is bs . I wear one anytime the boat is under way especially in hopedale/shellbeach with all the (as w would say) pilgrims out there .... Might as well re name that entire area plymoth rock

bjhooper82 07-17-2011 09:39 AM

that is terrible

As I read these responses my first thoughts were not nice. But I had to take a second and remember that those of you that posted here were strangers to this family and I am a stranger to you. I realize 100% that mistakes were made by many of the people involved and that because of those mistakes a little girl, unless a true miracle occurs and believe me we are praying for one, is gone. I will say this - if you are a parent and have any sense of self-reflection then you know you are far from perfect. These families are good, Christian families that do great things for our community and have raised their children to be the same. Only a few know the exact circumstances of the accident so instead of spending your time starting a post that bashes a family that is waiting for someone to find the body of their child why don't you spend your time hugging your children and praying to God that He watch over her and wrap His arms around her family and those that are searching for her. Keep in mind as friends and family search on the web for any updates this pops up. I think they have suffered enough, don't you?

drpuldo 07-17-2011 08:27 PM

prayers sent.

We will all keep the family in our prayers. As a father I cannot imagine what it would feel like to be in this position and I hope I never know. Please do not take the previous comments of others personally, I agree none of us know the circumstances surrounding this horrible accident. I hope good news is coming soon.

southern151 07-17-2011 08:34 PM

Forgive me for not knowing all the circumstances surrounding this tragedy. After the day that was had yesterday by eman and me, forgive us if we are a little jaded on the subject of safe boating. How we avoided the same situation this family is in is a miracle!!! My thoughts and prayers, although not expressed here were certainly heard in church today. It was shared in the same prayer thanking God that I didn't have the same search going on today for my dad or eman.

God bless and, I wish that family all the best in their time of true crisis, regardless of circumstances surrounding this accident.

I started this post not to bash anyone but to ask WHY???
No child or adult should ever be in a boat underway w/o a PFD on and secured. I can't imagine what it would be like to lose a child ,nor would i try to. Christian , atheist ,agnostic or any other religion really makes no difference . Yes they have / are suffering . But if this post makes one person stop and put a life jacket on their child or themselves or makes one person pay a little more attention when driving a boat and prevents another tragic accident . Then this post did what i intended it to do.

mrsfishy 07-17-2011 11:21 PM

And the intention of my post was to quite simply say time is better served praying for these families than stirring up negative emotions towards them while also creating a "google hit" for those of us searching for any information/updates on the search efforts. The accident alone will accomplish what your intentions were, if that is in fact what they were. My impression from your post was to get people fired up and angry at the adults for not having the girls in PFDs. As you can see from all of the posts previous to mine, that is exactly what it did.

Dink 07-17-2011 11:31 PM

It sure pissed me off mrsfishy.........and I'm still pissed.....parents are here to teach and protect our kids. Leaving the dock with children in a boat without lifejackets is irresponsible and moronic!! I'm sorry if these are good people and you know them, but this is a tragedy and could have been avoided!! Today's PFD's are designed to turn kids (that have been knocked out by the collision) over on their backs so they don't drown. Even if the accident wasn't the fathers fault, the PFD surely could have saved her.......yes its a difficult time, but if spreading this story around saves even one little ones life, like E-man said, its worth the discomfort of the people that are "offended" by this thread......

I'm sorry this has happened, but it may be a learning experience that many will learn from

eman 07-17-2011 11:49 PM

MsFishy.
What's done is done, i posted it for folks to see what happens when you don't wear a PFD or make your kids wear one. Prayer is a great thing but it wont bring back this little girl and it wont educate folks about boating laws and safe boating.
IMHO ,Folks should be angry at any adult that lets a child in a boat w/o a PFD.
I'm angry at myself right now for coming to close to this same thing happening to us sat. and none of us were wearing PFDs. One man ended up in the water and one knocked out on the floor of the boat. None of us had PFDs on.
If i would have not posted about this accident. maybe someone sees it on the news ,maybe not maybe they read it somewhere else maybe not.
Hopefully prayer can bring comfort to the family that lost a child .
But w/ her in a PFD a lot better chance the prayers wouldn't be needed.

simplepeddler 07-18-2011 08:57 AM

I agree on all accounts of this post........
But guys, they way for this wound to start the healing process is to stop poking it.
Trust me, whomever could have put the PFD's on and did not, does not need all of us to remind them now.

Having been through similar, this is gut wrenching agony for the family and friends.
Let's cool our "master of the obvious" judgemental jets and let some time pass.

Then we can start awarness program again.

We as boaters and fisherman need to be the frontline for ALL boater/rider safety.

Again I concur with the original poster.
But today, I will stand down from what is obvious, and stand up for what is needed, prayer, compassion and love.

Nuff said.
