Any "shrinks" here?

Ok, I'm crazy, but not the one in need of the shrink. Here's the deal:

I have a guy right now at offshore water survival school. This man is mid 50's, makes a ton of money, and has been working oil/gas all his life. He has just "freaked out" in the simulator and is refusing to get back in.

I have made him leave the facility, go drive around and run some errands. I, as well as he, knows this is psychological, but he is at the level of having a true panic attack right now. He has worked himself up to the point where staying there is not helping him.

I have spoken to the facility and they have agreed to get him back in the water after everyone else leaves and spend more 1 on 1 time with him. He has agreed to go back and do a "sweat chair", which is not the same and will not allow him to pass the course. If I can't get him back in that simulator and through the course, his career offshore is toast. Does anyone have any ideas on how to help him get over this "phobia" that if he is upside down he will drown? I am doing eveything in my power to help him, but I am stuck on this one!

Thanks and all help is appreciated!

Ok, you have a typical panic attack also known as anxiety disorder. Once a person gets in his head he does not want to do something there really is nothing anyone else can do. medications help tremendously but must be prescribed by a physician. Other than him making his mind up to go through the simulation your hands are pretty much tied.

Im assuming he has done this before right?Just remind him of that fact and that nothing has ever happened to him before. Also that there are thousands of people that do this daily and it isnt dangerous.

Well, Kudos to my guys over at Occupational Safety in Da'Berry. They were able to take their time, get everyone out of the pool, and get some extra guys in the water to help him through his phbia.

Just got the call he made it after a few extra hours of work!

Glad to hear he made it!!!!!!!!

One thing though, got to be very careful with in the future, Since he's in training he should be on the clock. If something would have happened to him, say a panic attack & he went ape $$%^ in the simulater & hurt himself or someone else you just bought yourself a OSHA recordable. Also by sending him out on the road to calm down & he was still on the clock & he hadn't gotten his mind back or fully recovered & got in a wreck you just bought yourself a recordable, or worse if he would have died in a vehicle accident you or who ever sent him out on the road knowing the state of mind he was or had been could go to prison. Not trying to scare you, but its the facts. & I know it's human nature to try & help someone, my hats off to those that do, but remember, take care of yourself & family first.

Got a few years as a Safety Manager sometimes dealing with up to 1000 employees at a time, got just a little case management background.
But, I GLAD HE MADE IT!
