Night fishing Aug. 1st

Fished on a friend's wharf under the lights in Deatonville. All were caught on live mullet or pogeys. Strong south wind 10-15 early then after 1 am down to 5 mph. Saw HR&G night boat on Turner's. Fish did not really turn on until ater midnight for us. It was a short bite but we managed to keep 24 trout and threw away maybe 3-4 too small. Not the biggest trout but definately a mess to eat. Fish were finicky -- the would not eat artificials at all. Oh, except one hit a dorky mullet. The fish did not want a popping cork or on the bottom. Only way we caught them was a mullet on a khale hook in the first 12" of water. Had a great night with my good friend and son.

Oh, almost forgot. We would have probably added another dozen or so fish BUT a major snafu occurred. We caught bait on the first canal in Deatonville before headed to the wharf. We ran out of bait around 3 am so we made a run up there in the tahoe to get a bit more. I cast the net maybe 10 times and had over 100 mullet and pogey but mostly mullet. So, we put the bait in a minnow bucket and hang it off the wharf to keep 'em alive. You might know where I am going with this.

Somehow, in all the mess between pullin up the bucket and putting it back in the water the damn lid does not shut. :pissed: I pull up the bucket and only have 3 or so pogeys and 1 shrimp in there. Lost ALL the live bait! ! ! Oh, well time to clean up and turn out the lights at 4 am and head back to moss bluff.

I had that same thing happen to me with a bait bucket. Not a good feeling at all.

Before I bought the night boat I really thought I would be able to catch fish every night on plastic, that just is not the case.

Nice catch, cute little girl and thanks for the report.

That is my 4 yo daughter, Emmeline. She helped me put the fish on the table for the pic, put all of them back in the ice chest and put 2 at a time back on the table for me to filet. She then put the filets in the bowl of ice and water and put the rib cage in the bucket! She even helped me wash the table with a soapy rag!

Well we know she won't grow up to be one of those girls that won't touch a slimy fish! Great job getting her involved. What a cutie!

Awesome Pictures!
