How fast?

Found this little peach on southeasttexas.com and can't figure out why someone would hang a 40 merc on a 12' boat. Guess they don't understand the laws of physics in Texas.

That is just stupid! I had a 14' alweld with a 40 suzuki on it and it was very unstable over 3/4 throttle.

I don't guess y'all remember the early to mid 90's. They several 10'-12' boats with 40hp yamahas on them. I can post a link of some local guys running 60-70 in their 12'-14' boats with 40hp merc on them.

They race they little boats like that near picayune, ms. Fastest one I've heard of was a 7' wooden hull with a souped up 30 on it.

Raymond 09-07-2011 02:45 PM

think i am going to call him and see just how fast it is.

LPfishnTIM 09-07-2011 10:27 PM

My 1448 has a 35, i don't think its fast. I wish i could go faster.

Gerald 09-08-2011 12:25 AM

My 12' Al boat is rated for 8 hp.

I put a 15 hp one it once, I did not feel safe when I got near WOT. Note: I had nothing in the boat...... just me, so the "rig" was very light.

used to run a 1442 semi-v with a 40. i had to extend the tiller about 18-24" so i could sit more to the front and keep from going airborne. it was scary fast. at that age, it was a blast. at my age today, don't think i would try it.

flounder_smacker 09-08-2011 05:15 PM

i have a 40 on a 1442 and when your by yourself you cant really run it wide open it chine walks to bad but when you have 3 men and a dead animal its runs great.

They used to race them on the Sabine River all the time. Them Texas boys loved them. Fastmerc is dead on with the years it was popular.

Some of them boys had boats that would sink standing still. I know 1 guy that converted his merc to direct drive. Crank it on a sandbar and stop it on a sandbar, if not it sunk. Very fast boats!

Most of them were running custom made Borrell (sp) boats I think. Speed and years are spot on.
