Rifle

Mossberg Maverick bolt action rifle on sale at academy this week for 179.99 reg. 249.00. Are these any good? I do read good reviews about the ATR. Not in the market, just wondering.

BigChaf 09-20-2011 10:40 AM

I have always considered Mossberg bottom of the barrel for quality firearms, there are better choices out there, just my opinion.

evidrine 09-20-2011 10:44 AM

I stand by Mossberg shoguns 100%. Just not sure about the rifles.

IMO something that cheap can't be worth shat.

Mossberg shotguns are better than their rifles. Check out the Thompson Center Venture, around 500 bucks and shoot awesome. Put a nikon pro staff on it and you got a good setup for 700 bucks. My uncle just bought one and it is a very nice rifle without having to spend 1k. It groups just as good as my browning at 100 yards. http://www.tcarms.com/firearms/venture.php

Yeah.....anything less than $1000 is crap! And you'll need a $2000 tactical scope for it too.......

Gotta pay to play bra!

I have a co-worker that swears by his remington rifle and scope 30-06 combo from academy. He's dropped them all in their tracks, with a nice 10 pt for proof. Not much on Mossberg firearms.

evidrine 09-20-2011 01:40 PM

keep in mind athat im not buying one of these. Its just that $250 to $180 is a hell of a price drop, and if the gun is worh anything thats a hell of a deal. The ATR has some really good reviews and and its owners really seem to love them. I know that if you buy cheap, sometimes you end up with cheap. However, I honestly dont believe that you have to spend a fortune to have anything worth having.

ATR

Not sure aobut the Mav, but I have had the ATR 30-06 for about 4 years now with a Nikon Buckmaster 4X12X50, and I love it. I would buy one again if needed. Never was a Mossberg fan, at the time money was tight so I bought it. Just my opinion.

bohunterbiff 09-20-2011 03:03 PM

Often overlooked is the Remington 770 which is one of the better compromises between quality and price. Some sports stores retail them at $250 - $350, and the action is one of the better out there.

flounder_smacker 09-20-2011 04:50 PM

for 180 bucks buy one put a cheap bsa scope on it and take it to the range. see how it groups. if good then upgrade scope and hunt. doesnt group good cut the barrel and cut the stock to pistol grip and put it behind the seat of your truck.

evidrine 09-21-2011 08:21 AM

China? I actually think its more like Mexico/Texas. I think I read something like that.

evidrine 09-21-2011 10:21 AM

I also believe that they have an E.R. Shaw barrel.
