FFF (Brian) has a great tracking dog from what I understand. Does anyone in the Sulphur area have one?

How hard would it be to train one and what breed?

Loaded question, but here is my answer - What is the best breed for a deer dog?.......Anyone that finds it! lol!

Really, I have had the chance to see some dogs that were mixed breeds make recoveries, and I have also seen dogs that were bred and sold as "tracking" dogs that could not use their nose to find the food bowl.

Go to "United Blood Trackers" website and do some research. They have several good breeds that work well, and believe it or not, some of the "winnie dogs" are the best. I tracked with a Catahoula/Lab mix before and he was great, but I always came out bleeding from him dragging me! My buddy had a boxer that was awesome, but he got crazy and would try to bite people after he found the deer and you tried to touch it. At the end of the day, it all depends on what you want.

Have you seen those giant Dachsunds, google tracking dog/dachsund. I watch one on the outdoor channel, and I know a guy in Kansas that has one, they are supposed to be the best.

Lab/cat r hard to beat! Weve been using our female labs that we duck hunt over also! And they work great on a lost blood trail! 2 yrs ago a buddy gut shot a doe that ran into a hell of a briar bottom! 2 hrs after the shot we put My Bich and a buddys in down wind and they jumped her ran her down , and broke her down! When I went in for the shot my duck dog that sleeps at the foot of my bed every night and rolls on the floor with my godchildren had a hold of her by the neck, and was posessed by doggy Satan! One of my most proud moments of owning a lab!

Like I said........winnie dog!!!!!! There is a guy from New York that wrote some books on blood trailing, and he uses the long hair winnie dog. I have been to some tracking test and seen him and his dogs, incredible! I also here he sells pups for $2k, which is crazy!

I have a yellow lab and so does my father. Both of them are great tracking dogs. They are not related, and neither were ever particularly trained for it. It is just in their blood. Just letting them hang around the skinning rack while we are cleaning and from duck hunting. I just started treating it like I was looking for a dead duck and they run straight to em. Between the 2 of them, they have found over 10 deer and never lost one that was actually mortally wounded. I think lots of hunters have duck hunting labs that are just as capable as mine but just never tried it. First time I tried it, I shot a nice buck with my bow. Saw the arrow hit him in the vitals and couldn't find a speck of blood. After looking for an hour, my dad suggested going pick up my dog from the camp. Couldn't hurt. Went and got him, put him around point of impact and he ran straight to him. Been tracking ever since. After finding a deer with my dog with a buddy last bow season with no blood, he was so impressed he went and bought one too. His at 11 months, no relation to my 2 dogs, tracked a doe this year he shot with his bow.

I bet you could find them alot cheaper, minnesota, kansas, those areas they seem to be real popular up north and haven't caught on down here.

MY son brought a stray home, came out of a bayou, covered with fleas, malnurished, nursed it back to health, could not give it away, finally after taking it to the pound, a girl at work took him. I didn't now what I had till I saw one tracking deer on TV. Could have kick myself.

My neice works at University Animal Clinic. She brought home a brown and white one that was brought in and not wanted, but it is a slick haired one. She didn't want it to go to the pound. She has 2 Bassets and one weiner dog now.

Have you ever seen a full sized male dachshund? Rowdy. Like a little bull dog but long...

I am not sure if all of them have the "prey drive" like the ones from up north, but it would be cool to see if we have some down here that would do it. I really like the fact that my tracking dog can ride in my lap on the way home after the hunt!

Lap dog/deer stalker, prob eats a hand full of dog food a night, pay for the light weight heart worms pills, sounds like a good deal.
