Shrimpin

Im at work with no news paper and nothing on the news is showing anything about shrimp prices... Can anyone help me out? Do any of yall shrimp?

Hopedale Hustler 09-02-2009 10:34 PM

well ima tell you like this..it aint a good time to be in the business if your main source of income is shrimpin..150 shrimpers took busses too the capitol to protest last week...its rediculous right now...my uncles has been shrimping succesfully for 20 years and made a damn good living doing it..but he recently went back to welding..

CatDaddy 09-02-2009 10:38 PM

I started shrimping for fun, but would like to make a little money doing it, you know... like to pay for gas, ice, repairs, beer.ect.... I was just trying to stay in the loop with things, but it gets hard out here with no info. I aint quitting oy offshore job or nothing, i just like to do a little commercial fishing..

yaa i know what you mean...hell yeah its a great thing to do to put shrimp on the table...your best bet is to find about 10-15 local people around the house and start selling to them for some decent prices..cause the shrimp market is down so much you'll stay behind...i mean down like drasticaly to like 75-1.00 dollar a pound..

Yea.. Thats what i heard before i came back offshore several days ago. I think when they guys went to Baton Rouge, it had come up to 70-75 cents a lb for some 70/8-'s... They selling the Jumbos at the seafood shed in golden meadows for 2.00 a lb rite now...

Hopedale Hustler 09-02-2009 10:49 PM

well i guess if you can get on a couple thousand lbs. of jumbos you'll be ok huh?

Bigrat 09-02-2009 11:29 PM

in the houma/chauvin area most shimpers are on strike

Slidellkid 09-03-2009 01:52 AM

Well, I am probably an idiot but I paid $5.00 a pound to a guy selling jumbo's out of a van in Deridder last weekend. Hell, I wanted shrimp and he had them. Lots of other folks were buying them too. On Monday another person was selling jumbo's in Oakdale for $4.00 a pound and they were selling too. If you want to sell some shrimp I think you could do ok if you sell direct to the public without the middle man.

Jordan 09-03-2009 09:39 AM

the guy in deridder lies..... he orders his from over seas !!!

Slidellkid 09-03-2009 10:03 AM

Jordan,

How do you know about the guy in Deridder. I don't want to be buying any foreign shrimp. I don't kwow why he would be from outside of Louisiana with the prices being so low here as they are.

Wonder what he buys them for? He's probably making a tidy profit.

How were they packed? It they were in an ice chest with ice on them, he didn't get them from overseas.

Here in Cut Off the prices are ridiculously low. Many shrimpers are on strike. Another industry on the downfall. Thanks to our government.

Slidellkid 09-03-2009 10:59 AM

They were in an ice chest full of ice water so I guess they were local shrimp....they sure tasted good!

Jordan 09-03-2009 11:08 AM

he told me he gets them from a guy at a dock that orders them.... he said their ordered from over seas... i dont know....

live to fish 09-03-2009 01:43 PM

If they came from overseas they would be frozen and packed in vacuum bags.

My great uncle told me he got $0.70 for 26/30 count and the was the price for every size. After 3 days on the nets he he was $500+ in the red.

If any one wants shrimp let me know, my uncle and cousin both have large shrimp boats and they IQF their shrimp on the boat. Shoot me a PM if you want their number.

I have a lot of friends in Cameron who shrimp. Before the strike, the only shrimp house in Cameron was giving them 60 cents for 10/15's.
My dad and I installed a few IQF systems in their boats and at their houses and they paid us in shrimp because they have so much and they are not making any money.
I got 100 lbs. of fresh headed shrimp last time I was home for 1 days work.
They are selling the jumbo shrimp off the boats for around $2.50 to $3.50 per pound.
When I was off work, they had 31/35's, 21/25's, 16/20's with some 10/15's mixed in.
My wife liked shrimp until she married me. I get 400 to 500 lbs. a year for refrigeration work.
