Mercury 03/04 EFI.....Montauk?

Montauk,

Or anyone else that knows - what is the scoop on the 03/-4 Mercs with EFI. Found a boat I many be interested in and that is the motor that is on the back of it. I have heard the carbed models were pretty much bullet proof, don't know about the EFI. I would rather have a four stroke, but as little as I will actually get to use the boat it really won't matter as far as gas goes.

All I will say is the four stroke mercs are nowhere near as bullet proof as the 2 smokers.....stick with 2 stroke if you want a merc IMO. Four stroke you can't beat a yamaha or suzuki. Merc bought yamaha powerheads and stamped their name on it for a few years, that should tell you something.

My next motor is going to be a mercury 60 four stroke. They have a good reputation over here. I know of one with over a thousand hours on it. I know on the bay boats the suzukis are popular motors.

Just blew my motor, 150 efi merc, had 125 psi on all cylinders had the oil injection blocked off and was only turning 4800 rpms when it went. If I can swing it ill change the whole motor to a yamaha but if not ill be putting another powerhead. I can tell you this, it did run flawless until the last second with no warning so that tells you anything can happen. I wouldnt be scarred to run another one though.

So no oil? Definitely have it rebuilt. Mine was 3500 cash to rebuild. Way worth it when considering the price of a new motor and controls installed

just blocked off the oil injection system..pre-mix your own oil, guaranteed the right amount of oil everytime..worry free operation. And mine is beyond rebuildable, got it lil hole behind the starter where a piece of piston skirt came through or piece of rod!!

The EFI's are great motors. 'Almost' bullet proof.

Thanks. Went and looked at the boat today. The motor cranked right up like an EFI should but there was no "EFI" sticker on the motor. I thought all the Merc EFI's had a sticker that said EFI to differentiate them from the carbed models...is that right?

Well, that depends on f it was "cajunized", then there is no telling what stickers are on the motor. After getting my camo boat, I decided to let the boat manufacturer re-pait the motor to match, I applied the new decals, and YES, it is a 4 cylinder, 40hp, 4 stroke, EFI, with a 60 ecu. A brefore and after:
