when can we expect bait like shrimp to come into our lakes in swla and birds start working ?

One more week of temps like this they are moving up slow but moving.shad is back and shrimp are getting bigger.

Late May..if they keep the weirs closed off....get ready for a bad summer of fishing....that marsh is the food supply for the lake

Yes and it looks like that is what they are going to do.

Not saying you are wrong but I would think the ship channel would bring in plenty of bait?

Plenty of other routes for shrimp to enter the lake, dubya gonna burn lotsa gas lookin for birds this year:)

Yes it does but that bait goes to the marsh..which fish follow...you block the marsh you turn the bait which killsthe lake

Marsh on the east side is a nursery to the lake..with out it

Bad bad subject; Seem's every where I go more and more people are finding out the real story and extremity of this so called project.The farmer's almanac predict's drought condition's for numerous year's to come.I could go on on but I've gotten worked up over this enough;in closing I'll defintly support any group's that want's to petion this project.I hope that all that have enjoyed the opportunity to harvest the shrimp, crab's, and fishn in this reserve speak up and contact your state offical's and voice your point of view in this matter.

Do you really think that every shrimp in that lake comes from Grand Bayou? :shaking: Whattabout the whole west side of the lake? Reckon a shrimp ever been born over there? reckon a shrimp ever came in from the gulf following the ship channel? How bout north of Big Lake, there is a little bit of marsh up there isn't there?

No...but I know that grand and lambert feed the lake

That marsh os the heart beat of big lake...with out ot...lake dies fast....... But rita proved you can't stop mothernature

The weirs should just be removed period or at least be opened full time. Anything that affects the natural hydrology should be removed, but that is a different discussion all together. :)

I agree but before the ship channel was dug the lake wasnt as salty year round. So now we have to fix one man made problem with another one. i.e. the wiers.

Yep, and unfortunately that is a double-edged sword. The saltwater is good for the trout, but it isn't good for all types of marsh. If (when) the saltwater intrusion starts killing the freshwater/intermediate marsh (like southeast Louisiana) then....:redface:

Now they will make it a controlled waterway....closed when high salinty ands closed when lots of rain ...means closed all the time

Perhaps this is an issue that CCA should get involved with.
Maybe they could set up some type of forum to hear questions and concerns from fishermen.
Also, I would like to hear opinions from WL&F biologists and other interested parties.

I agree with W on this one.

While not the only marsh, it is by far the largest. I believe the majority of "bait" comes out of that marsh.

Think about how good the fishing was the year after Rita and the levee was gone.

The other side of this MAY be more larger trout. Again, look at the history of the wiers and size of fish caught.
