does lube need to be added to new Bocas or do they come pre lubed? and does hot sauce really gum up in ceramic bearings?

Shawn Braquet 02-24-2012 12:05 PM

Boca bearings come without lube. As far as hot sauce goes, i've never heard of it gumming up ceramic bearings. One of our reel guys that does upgrades uses it, he's never mentioned it. I use hot sauce on all my bearings but I don't use ceramics.

Jedi......if I was to call you would you ship? I'm in Baton Rouge, I need bearing for a Calcutta. It's old still does fine just feels gritty. It's been cleaned regularly.

I wanted to let everyone know that we talked to Mr. Larry at Boca bearing about hot sauce and ceramic bearings. Here's what he had to say about it:

"Stay away from Quantum Hot Sauce on the ceramic bearings. The orange seal bearings have ceramic balls, you can run the bearings dry or oiled with out any loss of performance. The ceramic balls are lighter and denser than the stainless steel balls and they have a slight chatter to them when they spin because of the speed of the bearing. By adding a drop of high speed oil it lubes the races and balls and quiets them down. The best way to oil the bearing is to remove the orange seal, add a drop of oil to the bearing and install the seal back on the bearing. Oiling the bearing also increases the life of the races by keeping everything lubed up. If you are going to oil your bearings make sure you use an oil that is designed to be used with ceramic bearings like our high speed oil.

Stay away from oils that claim to bond to stainless steel bearings. Since the bearings in the orange seals are ceramic that type of oil will gum up the inside of the bearings because the oil will not be able to penetrate the ceramic balls causing the bearings to spin roughly."

"Hot Sauce is great on wings and fish, but not on ceramic bearings!" :rotfl:

dont some rods let you cast further also

SGib 02-28-2012 03:29 PM

The bocas are the "Tits". The Curado it seems that you can cast further with my less effort. The citica feels like a completely different reel. Really smooth and distance is great with those orange #7s.

PUREBAY2200 02-28-2012 03:32 PM

Is there a set made for the core 50 mg
I see the curado 200 and 50 have a set ; and the lews so I can upgrade those.

RAGINJROB 02-28-2012 04:16 PM

I see they come in set of two. Do you use both in one reel or does the reel only require one? And about how much are they a set?

spool bearings come with two. one for each side of the spool.. 18$ for the abec 5's (the one under the orange seals)

You need both of them for the reel, 1 drop of high speed oil in each bearing and the Ceramic abec 7 (orange) are 29.99

I put some Boca ABEC#7 bearings in two of 4600c3 reels and was amazed ! It casts way farther than it ever has before. I also used the high speed oil they sell for them. I used the same oil on the level wind.
I have been using Boca bearings on my radio control airplane engines for years and have always been very happy with them.

Just dropped off 3 E7's at TTB for service and bearing upgrade (Boca). It was nice to meet Jedi and the very friendly staff. Can't wait to try them out!!
