alligator sport license

Well ive been thinking about it for a while and im kinda stumped on the whole sport license part.all I want to do is get a license so I can legally kill an alligator for food.. I dont want to do it to sell them I just want to get one to eat.i dont want to get a whole lot mainly just one maybe two.well reading the laws and all that jazz a sport license is $25 but it says a sport license holder cannot be issued tags.if thats the case what is a sport license even good for then? I read amd reread amd am just having a hard time undetstanding this. can interpret and dumb it down a little..

I got that part, apparently to hunt publically its a lottery and the winner can end up paying what the alligator is worth?

Nevermind I found what I was looking for.

yea, im gonna try it this year. unless you own land on a body of water that has sufficient numbers of gators that need hunting, the only other option is lottery hunt

Harley123 04-13-2012 10:08 PM

Yea what did you find out cause I know a spot in north louisiana that has a few gators and they need to be thinned out

You have to own a certain amount of acreage to get a tag. ( one tag=one gator) Once you get tag you can get a hunter license, or if you know someone who hunts them you can gets a sports license and hunt with them. There are also several lottery hunts around the state you can apply for, but you go back to get tags=gator/license. And it is very expensive if you do it illegally and get caught. Think the fine is still upwards of 10,000$ and jail time.

Yea its harder than what Swamp People make it....you have to have access to hundreds of acres to get x amount of tags...then you buy your tags

around 80 to 90 acres per tag

It doesn't make sense to me. I own 40 acres in the basin that has a boat launch. Last summer I had to call the La. Wildlife & Fisheries to take out a 10'9" gator with a nuisance tag. I now have a gator at least 10 feet long that is giving me problems. But I can't get 1 tag cause I only own 40 acres.

Check with Shawn Braquet, he has a license and probably knows all the ins and outs there. Or Ray

Poeple watch Swamp People and think Gator Hunting is simple...just get tags and go,...

Troy has almost 30 thousand acres to hunt..

And RJ and JPaul due to being Native Americans have close to 70,ooo acres to hunt....this is how they get so many tags

Most have to lease every acre for atleast $20 an acre

When the season first reopened in the mid 70's, it was around 150-200 acres per tag. Then in the 80's it dropped acreage to around 100 per tag. In some areas, LDWF goes out and does surveys to determine what the acreage/tag ratio should be.

Marshland, agriculture canals and swamp are all allotted tags differently. Marshland usually has a higher tag to lower acreage ratio, with swamp having a pretty average tag to acreage ratio and agriculture land having a higher acreage to lower tag ratio.

With so many young alligators being released every year, the population is booming and may be out of control in some areas before too long.

I'm not trying to make any $ at it. Growing up I remember them having to set lines in our subdivision lake to remove gators eating neighborhood pets. That has always interested me. Quite honestly gators are animal that scares the crap outa me. I've always wanted to hunt gators and just do happened that a guy I know informed me on how to go bout trying to get a tag. Probably a one time thing but I want to mark it off my bucket list.

Well judging by what yall are saying maybe I didnt find everything. To my knowledge you have to have written permission and all the documents from the land owner to do it on private land. I wanted to do it on public land. You have to apply and you can only apply for one of three places. Wma ,public and someother one I cant remember. If you get selected for wma you have to get your sports license and are issued three tags which you pay $40 per tag. If you are selected for public landyou have to have your sports license amd are only issued two tags. This is what I got from reading it, this may be right or wrong or partially wrong. I may be wrong, but from my understanding the sport license is if you hire a guide and have him bring you out to shoot an alligator that he has a tag for.
From what I am told, if you are picked for a WMA or other public ground, you just buy the commercial hunters license. But you may be right about the sport license if picked for public land.

10-4 if you are issued a tag you get a hunter license, if you hunt /or help someone you can get a helper license on the hunters license but you can only hunt for hunter listed. sports license is only allowed on someones hunter license
