Motor Flush opinion

Would like you'll opinion on how long to flush a motor after running in salt water. Also would a barrel or ear muffs be better ? :)

Put the ears on turn on water run motor at idle for 10 mins. That's how I've always done it.

I use to put mine on the ears, let it run about 2 minutes and then disconnect the gas line. Maybe I wasn't supposed to that but I never had problems with any of them.

Long enough to open up the thermostat. Water coming out the pisser will be hot.

is it ok to run on ears even on big motors say 250 four strokes?

If oil injected you are pulling pure oil when it runs out of gas. Told not to do this. Don't know if it will actually hurt the motor

I also put some "salt terminator" in line with the muffs.

Yes it will hurt the motor because not all carbs run out of gas at same time. So you will be running 1 or two cylinders dry for a bit. It is not a good idea to run the gas out. As, mentioned, especially on oil injected motors.

The motors I had were not oil injected.

Recommended procedures for "Running" a F250 (Yamaha) is to utilize the ear muffs....for standard flushing of the engine (Engine Off) utilize the flush connection on the side of the engine......My procedures are to hook up the water hose and start cleaning some fish.....:D

Suzuki 250 book says muffs, I keep my boat in a marina lift. Usually the first thing I do is lift and flush through the block plug while engine is still warm. 3 years no problemms noted, water pressure on dock not always enough to pull enough through engine, depending on how many folks are using at the same time.

So far no one seems to like the barrel idea. Right now I have a plastic barrel cut and rigged with a hose attachment. I put the motor in (Johnson 115 ) fill up the barrel leave the hose running and crank the motor . I normally run at least 15 minutes. Sure is a lot quiter than ear muffs. Just hope it is doing as good of a job flushing. Motor has no thermostats.

Used da barrel on my 1970s eve befor but Damb grass died when I dumped it

Flushing

I have been running outboards for 30+ years and never have flushed one. I asked my mechanic about this and was told it is not really needed unless your motor is going to be idle for a long time.
