Has anyone ever raised geese?

My wife's grandmother had a goose hang out in her lake for years and it played with the kids all the time. It would follow them all over the place and let them pet it and even chased the car when we were leaving. Well a few months ago mother goose disappeared and the kids cried for days. Don't know if she got killed or just relocated. Any way my wife gave in and went to a local feed store and picked up 2 white Chinese swan geese. I built a cage for them and also set up a lil play pen in the yard with a little pool in it. They spend a few hours a day in the pool and the rest in the cage. Now we have had them for 2 months and they are huge! It's time to release them but I don't know if we should carry them down to the lake or maybe just open their play pen and let them wonder off on their own. Hopefully someone has experience with these things cause I do not want to buy more! Thanks.

Never raised geese but, I have raised quail and pheasant. Put them where you want them to be. They will not likely stray far from where you put them so long as you continue to interact with them.

I will caution you though. Predators are tough on cage raised animals. Neighborhood dogs to cats or coyotes can see them as easy targets.

This is the way we raise them. To take a picture. Just joking, I don't think the fench is going to protect them.

I have raised several from young, as someone stated earlier they will not go far once released. I currently have 2 out of 5 that run loose around my house and neighborhood. They are like dogs, walk up to anyone and very curious. 3 have vanished- dogs or coyotes. Kids love them but so do stray animals. If you release them just do it around other ducks or geese, they will bond with them and adapt and you can go back and look for them later.

Hey Justin sounds like a good reason to dig you a pond! For 2 geese I'd it needs to be at least a couple acres!:smokin:
& if she dont like the pond idea.....cook some rice!

I don't want any geese! That's why they stay at maw maws. That thing used to sit on the porch and scream untill the kids would go outside to play with it. Rice idea sounds good but the kids would hate me!
