Trout Growth

We hit a little spot last night and saw a ton of trout popping the water under a light. We started casting at em, and hooked up almost every cast. We sat there and caught em almost every cast for 2 hours. Don't get me wrong, we had a lot of fun, but..... problem was that only 4 out of the at least 100 trout we caught were TX legal. (15 inches). We tried everything in the tackle box to see if there was a bait that the larger trout (if they were there) preferred, but it was dink after dink. Question is, will that same school of trout hang around that light all suummer? And if they do, will they grow an inch or two in that time?

The expectation is that males will average 14" and females average 17" by their second birthday. Of course, growth rate depends on forage availability.

The bigger trout will usually stay down near the bottom or out around the edges of the light. Try fishing these areas to see if you can catch a few more bigger fish.

go to another light. or try that light in a few days or weeks and hope another school has moved in to take advantage of the food source. A big school of little ones is going to be a big school of little ones until something runs them off or eats them.

I have seen big schools of them behind grand isle. you could see a few bigger ones mixed in but it was too hard to get a bait to them. the little ones kept intercepting the lure.

it was very cool to watch them track the jig in the air.

There is a secret that I will share when it comes to finding undersized schools of trout. Have been doing this on Grand Isle when the 11 1/2" trout schools show up. Next time you are at Big Lake bring a 5 gallon bucket and fill it up with that magic water. If you find yourself in a school of small trout pour 1 gallon of the water around the school. 1 gallon will 'treat' 1000 fish. Let set for 10 minutes and then begin casting, the fish will have grown to legal size:)

Texas screwed up by having such larger minimum ..you take all the females and leave almost all the males as they grow slower

That's why a 12inch mininmum works great for La
