Hog Island / West Cove

I have not had good luck lately with water depth. How safe is it to launch at Hog Island and run into West Cove to fish? Any help would be appreciated.

You're good to go. Launch and run all the way to channel. Then to west cove. Don't take boat lane from hog island into west cove. Very shallow.

Also...... I remember reading a post that said there is a metal "post" sticking up somewhere near the West Cove cut from Hog Island Gully. It was used to moor a boat during Rita.

Has anyone ever seen this "post"..... please report more info.

Yes I have. It's on the left hand side if I remember correctly on the cove side coming from the gully. I ran thru there and have seen other boats do the same it shallow but just trim up n go slow and you should be fine

I do run thru there, but I've fished there all my life. If you're not familiar with it I still suggest running to the channel.

Might be better off just driving a little further south to the west cove launch and run down that canal all the way to the crab trap capital of the world into west cove.

Got a few crab traps over by Grand bayou. Pic taken in late May a few years ago.
