BassYakR 08-22-2012 06:40 PM

I dunno if that is brackish or fresh

A friend of mine with a yak catches well out there, mostly reds I think.

Are you talking about black bayou? Ive heard of people catching reds. Nothing to brag about or make a special trip for. I catch catfish and bluegill in the south fork which is the launch off gulf hwy past gaspards and browns. Fished it a couple times for bass but the water is always dirty. I say give it a shot and let us know. Im curious about that part of the bayou as well

I know a guy that use to bring trot lines out there for catfish at a certain time of year.

Been fishing it since I was 6 years old. Used to be great for bass, bluegill and goggle eye, but the storms ruined that. Got pretty salty for a while and good for reds. Now its getting back to what it used to be, lot of gars in there now. I know some guys that catch catfish out of there, but its not what it used to be. But, if there are bluegill in the south fork, bet your dollar they are in the north. Reds aren't in there very thick any more at all. Used to be a lot of big reds too.

Oh and if anyone is curious, it is called hypolyte Coulee until you get down to a fork in the bayou.....that is black bayou north.

Man, I used to kill them in Hypolite but it has been 15+ years easily. Lots of great limb lining (live crawfish)to the left from that launch. And to the right some of those cuts are private and some public. If you can find a cut that isn't posted especially if they open up to a decent pond and have grass growing you used to could catch a bunch of small 12-14"bass. Home of the humpback bass.

Smalls 08-22-2012 08:59 PM

Yeah, pretty much every cut is posted now. You can really only fish the main bayou, and a few cuts on the north side. I mean if you really want to give it a try, go ahead, but I worked down there for a week this summer and have been down there pretty often all summer running my boat, and there is never anyone there. Just not a whole lot to catch. It needs a few years of low salinities to get some good bass and bluegills back in there. Don't see any reds being in there anymore, too fresh.

I run juglines durning the winter i dont set the world on fire but average around 10 a fish. I use to duck hunt out there during the late 90's and did good considering the location but since the drought in the early 2000s no grass and no ducks

Keywest18 08-23-2012 05:54 PM

Which part did you duck hunt? My old neighbor used to duck hunt down there

bayoublack 08-24-2012 10:44 PM

I use to hunt on the gray estate property i just didnt know it was the gray estates property at the time but i would take a right out of the launch and go down about a 1/2 mile and hunt some ponds on the left place was always good for teal and grays but the saltwater killed all the widgeon grass and they had 2 big rice fields out there and they stopped planting rice

My pawpaw use to live off freisen rd and when a big rain would come black bayou would flood and the ditches would fill up. And when the water went down I would fish off the bank and fill wash tubs up with bass and sacalait. So I know they're in there.

There use to be alot of bass bream white perch in there but it was it hard by the 2 hurricanes and then the drought last year it turned real salty. It looks good down there now, a couple years and it might come back.

Keywest18 08-25-2012 12:17 PM

Water was fresh thursday. Caught some bream and a few small catfish. Gonna go back in two weeks once i get back
