Rigging leaders

I was wondering how you guys rig your leader line to your main line. Is it better to use a swivel or tie together? thanks....

Hopedale Hustler 10-04-2009 12:18 AM

swivel...but im no croaker soaker haha :shaking:

Montauk17 10-04-2009 12:22 AM

Im talking about a leader for fishing plastic too.....I much rather 12lb test cause it cast so much better but specks and reds teeth tear it up.

Ray 10-04-2009 12:24 AM

I use a swivel also. Everything is tied, not crimped.

Hopedale Hustler 10-04-2009 12:25 AM

yeah..i never mess with a leader much on any plastics except for when im throwing gulp or doa's under a cork..wich also is rare..i guess its just about personal preference..when i do usel live bait though i use a swivel...unless im Tuna fishing...then i go line to line...

Bluechip 10-04-2009 12:25 AM

I use a swivel but my fishing partner ties his line together...I really have not noticed a difference....and I use it for artificial also because I fish with 10lb test with a stronger line for a leader...

leader

90% of the time i use a 20 lb florocarbon leader w/ a swivel tied to 30 lb power pro. The other 10% i use a fly rod.

Ray 10-04-2009 02:15 AM

I use 12 lb. mono with swivel and 20 lb. leader.
When I don't use a swivel, the last foot or so of my line gets pig tailed looking after
throwing the lure a lot.
When I use the leader and swivel, I don't have to keep cutting off a couple feet of line every now and then.

Ray 10-04-2009 02:16 AM

I also started using the H&H flutter hook jig heads instead of plain lead heads.
The lure don't come off as easy, even after several fish.

Thanks guys.... I use to use 15lb and 17lb test untill I spooled a reel with 12lb sufix, now thats all i use.

fishinpox 10-04-2009 09:45 AM

i use 20 lb power pro with a 20 lb fluro leader tied together with a uni to uni no swivel

Montauk17 10-04-2009 11:29 AM

I would tie them together but my knot tying skills are not the greatest.....I would hate to loose a fish because of that.

Wag 10-04-2009 11:33 AM

I usually fish 10 or 12 lb. test with a 15 or 20 lb. flurocarbon leader, tied line to line

just pratice it is way nicer being to reel in your knot and not have to worry about a swivel damaging your guides , i have lost mabey 1 fish due to knot failure but have damaged way more guides due to the swivel

Montauk17 10-04-2009 01:38 PM

Thanks for the info but I think i'll try the swivel for a while

All you need to know is one knot. If'n I can do it, you can too. I have been tieing the same knot since I was a kid and it never failed me yet.
It is about the easiest knot there is to tie too.

What knot is that Ray???

LaAngler 10-04-2009 10:47 PM

for mono to mono i use a surgeons knot, blood knot, or small swivel if using a sand eels or spoon.

speck-chaser 10-04-2009 10:50 PM

if you use a swivel, your not reeling the swivel all the way into your eyes are you?
