Shrimp behind the weirs

Couple weeks ago, Gerald and I saw 20 or so boats throwing cast nets.
They were catching lots of big shrimp. I guess some of these folks got excited and kept more than they were supposed to.

From the LDWF website:
SEVEN PEOPLE CITED ON CAMERON PRAIRIE NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE

Release Date: 10/06/2009
Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Enforcement Division agents cited seven individuals on Sept. 26 for alleged recreational shrimping violations on Cameron Prairie National Wildlife Refuge located in Cameron Parish.

Lewis Davis Jr., 49, Yvette Davis, 47, James McCown, 51, Bernadette Meyer, 52, Darrell Meyer, 50, all of Welsh; and Anthony Brock, 44, and Larry Demarest, 57, of Vinton; were all cited for violation of special refuge regulations for taking over the limit of shrimp. Lewis Davis, Yvette Davis, Darrell Meyer and Bernadette Meyer were also cited for violation of special refuge regulations for failing to maintain custody of shrimp.

Agents observed the seven as they cast netted on the refuge and noted the violations as they took place. Those cited for failing to maintain custody of shrimp were observed taking limits of shrimp off the refuge then returning to catch another limit.

The penalty for a violation of special refuge regulations is a fine between $250 and $5000, and/or jail time plus court costs. A $10 per pound restitution fee is also assessed on all shrimp taken in excess of the limit.

A total of 233 pounds of shrimp were seized in connection with these violations and were donated to the Calcasieu Parish Women's Shelter in Lake Charles and A City of Refuge in Vinton.

I like to see that every once in a while people doing the wrong thing do get caught. There are times that the game wardens are a little harder than they need to be but in cases like these I am glad they are out there.

If they caught their limit, brought them in and came back for more, then they knew
what the limit was and they knew they were doing wrong.

Mediumheavyaction6'6 10-08-2009 07:07 AM

I agree.

jsmoke222000 10-08-2009 07:21 AM

what's the per person or per boat limit?

Jordan 10-08-2009 07:41 AM

1-5 gallon bucket/day

cabwiz2 10-08-2009 09:42 AM

I dont know about over thee, but on Rockefeller Reserve they dont go by the 5 gallon bucket anymore. They weigh the shrimp. and if you fill a 5 gallon bucket to the top it will hold up to 5 lbs or so more depending on the size of the shrimp. And if you have 25 lbs and are still casting they will write you up in a heartbeat. They did this because people were bringing pool chemical buckets which are larger than five gallons and saying oh I thought it was a 5 gallon bucket. I am just saying because this is the time the shrimp start to pour out the marshes in great numbers and the wardens are putting sting operations in place. Oh and the limit is per boat/vehicle not per person.

LaAngler 10-08-2009 09:46 AM

they catching shrimp down at sabine too

Ray 10-08-2009 09:49 AM

A normal 5 gallon bucket holds around 25 lbs.

Ray 10-08-2009 10:08 AM

From the Cameron Prairie website:

The daily shrimp limit during the
Louisiana inshore shrimp season is five gallons of headson
shrimp per day, per vehicle or boat. The daily bait
shrimp limit is one gallon per day per boat, outside the
Louisiana inshore shrimp season and before noon during
the inshore shrimp season on Sabine.

Too many regs. I'd rather pay $2 whatever per lb and drink beer

Raymond 10-08-2009 11:55 AM

There were 5 boats back there yesterday afternoon catching skrimps and redfish. Skrimps were big 10/12 count, caught 15#'s along with several reds. Glad the WLF are doing their jobs if not we would not have any resources left with all the hogs in the world.
