Used truck concerns

Guys:

Need input please. I am looking to buy a used truck to take fishing/hunting. I don't need anything fancy but need it to be dependable to go to West texas to my lease. Will only be used on weekends since I have a company car. Probably average 500-700 miles a month.

Question: Would you be concerned to buy a 2004 F150 ext. cab FX4 with 205,000 miles on it? I can get it for around $5000.

What are the main concerns?

TIA,

Latt

Rear main and transfer case. If you are serious, go spend a couple hundred dollars with your favorite mechanic and have them do a thorough checkup on it. They'll be able to tell you much more than anyone here because they'll have their hands on it.

I seen that truck on craiglist it looks really nice.

I sold mine with 196k 2005, I would buy one in a heartbeat for that price if the tranny feels good and 4x4 works.

X2 on bringing it to the mechanic though, you'll want to do that with anything you buy regardless of miles.

Not sure what year or engine size for that matter, but I remember hearing that some of the newer Ford gas engines were a SOB to change the spark plugs. Like super expensive for this relatively simple job.

Got a 2003 single cab with your name on it!

This is true. They are a "cab-over" design now. The rear cylinders are almost impossible to get to without lifting the cab.

The problem was with the two piece plugs seizing if they weren't changed, and they would snap off in the block. This would require some serious labor added. There is a TSB on these and the dealers follow the procedure to loosen them and get them out without breaking them.

If the truck has had the plugs changed in 205k then the problem is null, it's the factory plugs that had the problem. You can change them yourself if you're certain they've been done previously.

looked at truck and test drove it. When it started there was a loud sound from underneath. Guy said he was told catalytic converter was bad and needed to be changed. Said there were 4 on this truck. Also, there is an after market air filter that is cone shaped. Makes a strange sound when accelerating. he said his is due to the air filter. Also, window motor on passenger side is about to go out. one more thing. It has a slight front end shake when driving down highway. said he took it to lake charles allignment and they said it was not an allignment problem but needed new tires. said they were worn unevenly.

Man, cats are high, even aftermarket! Then diagnosing the bad one. Front end could be bad balance on tires, bent wheel, bent hub, worn joints....

Air filter deal could be correct. Window regulator assembly will run you $80-100 for the part alone.

I think I'd pass on this one.

I don't know to much about Ford, but a GM truck is gonna need a front suspension rebuild when it has that many miles on it. You should take it to a mechanic to make sure unless you're gonna have the money to rebuild.

Get a Toyota......

definately passing on this truck. # 1 reason, high miles. #2 reason, too many things wrong/possibly wrong.
