It says RoyOMartin owns the land and leases the land to hunters. I see a situation where 1 bad sport ruins it for everyone. RoyOMartin can easily say "ok yall want to get my name involved in the media for killing a black bear? Well you can just find a new place to hunt then." Shame

DUCKGOGETTER 12-06-2012 08:00 AM

This is sad

and i wouldn't blame him i would do the same thing

RoyO is a timber company. They lease out land all over the state. They won't be cutting off that cash flow I can promise you.

jlsch1 12-06-2012 08:48 AM

I agree Roy O Martin is a timber and land mgmt company just like Georgia Pacific, Louisiana Pacific (company GP spun off due courts said too large in 1970's GP was to Miss River and LP was Louisiana to the Pacific), International Paper, etc. Big boys like GP, IP, since the early 2000's were running away from land mgmt selling out to smaller regional guys. There is no money in land mgmt for the big boys anymore. Cheaper for the big boy mills to buy timber on the open market to supply the lumber mills, paper mills, etc. Leasing land is apart of their business plan to remain profitable.

The land mgmt companies need every penny they can get to be profitable.
I do see them possibly not allowing the group that leases the land presently to resign with them. They may also become stricter on clubs that lease land from them. I do not see them losing revenue from not leasing the land in today's timber market.

Thanks for the history lesson guys but notice I said it could "easily" happen, not that it would. Lets get back to black bears and manatees

Duck Butter 12-06-2012 09:29 AM

I just hope this was an honest mistake where the guy mistook it for a pig and not just a purposeful killing. Both of those areas have pigs so maybe it was an honest mistake, I doubt it but maybe:redface:

The incident where the LSU professor was on Red River and shot a mother and a cub was an honest mistake and the guy owned up to it, and that was quite a hefty fine. That took a LOT of integrity right there

He is a ULL professor and still hunts Red River. He was up there this past Thanksgiving. Not only did he own up to it, he marched himself right up to the game wardens and turned himself in.

That took some fortitude! 99% of people would not have done that

Don't see how shooting a bear, AND a cub, is a mistake. If you can't tell the difference between a pig and a bear then you have no business in the woods with a gun in your hands. One of the top rules of hunter safety is target identification - looks like the professor needs to go back to school;)

On another note, turning himself in was the admirable thing to do.

First let me say that you are right about target identification. But I could see how the mistake could be made. You've been hunting out there your whole life. You've never seen a bear. You always see hogs. It's very thick out there and you never have a clear shot. He saw the black animals and his mind automatically says hog. So, I can see how the mistake was made. But again, he broke a major safety rule and that is target ID. He paid dearly for it with his pocket book. Part of sentence was to tell his story of misidentification to the students at hunter safety courses. He ended up enjoying that experience so much he became a hunter safety instructor himself.

Duck Butter 12-06-2012 11:21 AM

I agree with both, but I do see how it could happen. I know a biologist that works around bears all the time. He was hunting for hogs, had a .22 and got on a group of hogs. He was on the ground in tall palmettos. He shot a black pig and piglet, the others ran off. He sat and a couple minutes later the palmettos were moving and all he could see was black hair above the palmettos moving and black hair in between the palmettos, safety is off ready to go, adrenaline pumping, etc. Turned out to be a bear, and was very close to being a shot bear. That is a bit of a rare occurence but they happen.
This is another reason we have a little more strict pig regulations is because of bears.

Good story:)

Maybe the kids who shot the whooping cranes last year will do the same or at least learn from their mistakes

I'd bet that after their folks got done paying for those cranes, that their stupidity got fixed!

I got the first hand account over a beer with this guy during dove season a couple years back. He's no average hunter either...spends a ton of time in those Red River woods and had killed over 10 pigs that year off the stand he shot the bear out of. You gotta toast the guy for manning up.
