pulling up boat carpet
Hey all, wanted to see if anyone has done this and has some tips. I am pulling up the carpet in my boat and want to make it just a regular non-slip painted deck. so, anyone ever pull out carpet out of a boat, and have an easy way to do it?
|
Man, that is a pain in the hump to say the least. i did that a few times in my older boat. best way i found was to rip out as much as you can by hand and then use a grinder with a sanding wheel to remove the glue and left over carpet. the decks i had were aluminum and i re-carpeted the decks.
hope this helps. |
There is some kind of aerosol spray that removes the left over glue after you pull up the carpet.... I helped my dad do his but I can't remember the name of the spray.. I'll try to find out
|
i've done it, started with the spray, ended up still using grinder!

They sell some stuff called Goo Gone that might work.

I've done it.. Use a big paint scraper... Almost like a mud trowel.. Then use a mini grinder.. Be sure to use a Wirewheel cup..
It will get the glue off and not the surface its glued to... I'd look into rhino lining it.. |
I am getting ready to do mine too and a buddy told me to use oven cleaner to break the glue down and scrape it off.

Try a product called "Goof Off"
found at Lowe's or Home Depot |
Like everyone else said, use some goo gone and buy a spray bottle when you get it. Just spray it on then let it sit overnight and the carpet will come off but you'll still have to do some grinding and scraping to get all the glue residue off. This exactly how we did my buddy's bass boat.

Used a wire wheel on mine... used spray in liner from WalMart.
|
is spray in liner slippery when wet?

For the removal of the carpet, I used a "Multi-Tool" with the semicircular knife edge blade. It sliced right down to the metal as it's slightly flexible. Hold up an edge of carpet and slice, and slice, like skinning a deer. Then comes the wheels.

3M adhesive remover is the bomb for taking off the glue. Check out durabak for a liner, good stuff. If you go that route make sure you get the one with the UV formula. http://www.nonslipcoating.com/
|
did you use that durabak? I am thinking about that, it seems the cheapest way to go for me. My boat is fiberglass, I just worry that it might not look as good as going the gelcoat, and non-skid paint way.
|
I used it on a custom craft fiberglass boat I used to own, came out nice. It was a 15 foot boat and I barley had enough with a gallon putting 3 coats down. I like the stuff, bout to do some fiberglass work to my boston whaler gunna use the durabak on the front and rear decks. Just make sure you get the uv rated one,if not the color will fade.

saw a few videos of it on youtube. Looks like some good stuff! definately going to use it for the main floor of the boat.
