Sulphur Mines?
Anybody ever fish there? Im headed there this Saturday for a kayak tournament and have never been. Any advice appreciated.
Thanks |
Don't try to go between boats already fishing. Is just rude

However with the cold you may want to stay in deep water channels
|
It's usually the boats circling me. Lol

Look for the 99 other kayaks there. Water was very low today and very muddy

Yes use to have some great trips back in the day. The entrance has deep water nearby and you will see boats stacked up there, across the lake you will find a nice flat full of oysters. On warm days we would have a good bite on the flats. The canals around the mine are usually fully of redfish, just fish points and run outs. Good luck....

The bay to the left of the boat house is usually good. With the water as low as it is and dirty from pumps running best bet is the mine and surrounding points. That's where I am headed anyway.

I have had good trips fishing the deeper canals to the north of the mine. Fish like you would be bass fishing.... Get in the middle of the channel and throw towards either bank....If you do not get hit near the bank, work your bait down the drop off... It takes some getting used to. On colder days the fish will be deeper and your strikes will come after your bait falls off the drop off, but when the sun comes up and the water gets warmer u will get hits near the banks. Have caught nice boxes of trout and redfish there. Good luck!

Thanks for info. Since I've never been there I plan on heading to the mine first to check it out.

Rob I went a couple years ago about this time. They have a deep hole right next to the launch where the pumping station is. There was a guy working on a limit of trout from the parking lot when I was there. I parked my yak on the other side from the hole from him and caught a couple then decided to hit the mine and skunked there. That was when I learned not to leave a spot if you are catching fish.
Also the main canal can get extremely shallow on the edges. I got stuck in soupy mud in a Scupper Pro. Took about an hour to push my way out with my paddle. |

Rob. See ya there tomorrow. Word is no water. Hobies could not even peddle past the first camp in main canal.

If you launching at besson and paddling out to the mine. There is a few deep holes in the middle of the bay fish on bottom and should get good numbers, also the canal on left mine brings you to bayou blue which all in there is prime too. Also when you leave the launch the first canal on left is a lil deep so try there also, Im always back there being I live right down the rd. and hunt and fish the area.

Responded. Thanks
The water was very low in the Bason's area today. Made it out to the mine and nothing too well. Everyone there was saying nada. We ran into some healthy reds on the way in there in a feeder canal. Both of us hooked up for a double hookup. I ended up getting another one after that and then one that ran under my friends mirage drive and got off. Ended up finishing 11th out of 102. Also had a nice solid trout to throw in. Fun day out there Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |
Well.... I was in the Nada group. First scratch all year.;). Fished the mine mostly and tried to hit some canals but they were too shallow.
And to top off my day I had to limp back to the launch with half a mirage drive. Snapped a rod on one of my fins. |
