Lamprey Eel A.K.A Puppy Dog eel

6 Attachment(s)
Anyone ever heard or seen of these things ?? Was doing a last minute wood duck hunt sunday and ran across this dude. Slimy critter and very slow moving animal. Feels like catfish skin. No scales of course. Did a little research on google, and came up with a lamprey eel. My grandpaw seen the pics and said it is also known as a puppy dog eel. What's ya'lls thoughts and has anyone seen one ?? Pics attached.

yea we call em mud puppies. saw one a few weeks ago, but that was the first one I've seen in decades. when I was a kid we had em everywhere. We dug our pond and there was dozens of em out there.

its dead now.... couldnt pick it up so i stabbed the tail and unfortunately cut the intestines out and im sure it died. but it was very aggressive. Next one i find, i'll bring it home and put it in an aquarium. cool little critter, just didnt know if it was poisonous.

FF_T_Warren 01-23-2013 11:42 AM

it was loading up like a snake does before it strikes and it was biting my waders. wasnt trying to get away from me, thats for sure.

Amphiuma. Very painful bites. Its a type of salamander. Find em all the time in ditches. Very mean suckers.

didnt know how common they were. E-mailed LSU Ag center asking them if I found another one if they wanted it. No answer back. Surely they already have one on display.

They are very common...i've seen hundreds in the ditches that i've frogged in.

We used to catch them in the ditches in my neighborhood after a good rain when i was a kid. they are very very mean and have a nasty bite! Bio teacher in high school had one in a fish trank in the classroom. Mean little suckers!

Used to catch them in crawfish traps alot in Gueydan. I guess it was the same kind ugly and had some little legs.
