1/8oz jig head from Dec to March..........1/4 oz from Late March till Nov bounce like a sand ell or any other plastic............. I have used it under a cork before in the winter but you don't need a cork right now!! If water is under 65 throw a 1/8oz jig head this is purely a numbers bait and has out fished any bait for over half a century for bigger trout use cork like baits (corky, manic Mullets or bigger plastic etc.) |
Spent over 10 years (bout age 11-25) catching ice chests of specks, lots of limits, with my dad in Grand Isle using nothing but double rig Glow or White Sparkle Beetles with red jig head bounding off the bottom, or faster retrieve twitching. Don't ask me why, but it always seemed RED was a must for that jig head. We've seen people use the white or green jig heads with same sparkle beetles and for some reason not catch much when we were catching them 2 at a time on our rig. We would catch lots of numbers...not many real bit trout, though.
Started fishing Big Lake area a few years ago after moving a bit west of Lafayette after marriage, and started off fishing that same Glow rig in that region. Did well, but I've transitioned a bit towards the Glow/Chart eel, jrs. Going to rig up two rods tomorrow for Turner's, one with a sparkle beetle/sand eel double, and the other with a Vudu Shrimp to try (Pack & Paddle is out, but a good buddy is graceful enough to lend me a couple to try). We'll see...hopefully get good conditions. Still trying to get the hang of BL. I've maybe launched in that area 10 times are so. Had some success catching big trout and flounders on the eels a few mornings this past summer standing on the rocks towards the end of the ship channel. They've definitely been bigger than I used to catch in G.I., but not nearly the numbers. |

Does jig head color seem to matter? |

I have never in my life as far as I can remember used a color jig head (for trout) !! just lead |

Chart will not hurt if it matches but can't go wrong with lead for any color

I look for every color and spend more time trying different colors. |
Thanks guys... I loaded up the tackle box... I'll give a report tomorrow... Hopefully with pics.

I like sparkle beetles under a cork but for tightline for some reason I do better with the salty grubs. If you can find some glow manns grubs, money. The H&H version works too. Small bait but I have caught several 3-4 pound trout on em.
