Castnet Quality

I know there are some high dollar cast nets out there. Do they really make a difference over your average run of the mill Academy special? What size throws the best?

All I throw is the Tyzac 6 footer-3/4 lbs of lead per foot. Can throw it all day.

I throw an 8ft walmart special. Never have to makr more than a few throws. The first throw the net is a little stiff but no big deal. Ive heard people soaking theirs in walmart so they stay soft

Cast nets come in diff hole sizes & weights.
Consider this also.
How deep will u need it to sink & what size bait are u going after.
Maybe get a few diff kinda to cover all the possibilities...

I threw just for shrimp in 5-10 ft water.
I had a 1/4" hole . Can't remember weight.

I want a new one for shrimping. I want at least 1/2 inch and would consider 3/4 inch so small shrimp and bait fish can pass thru

U hold weight in ur mouth or over shoulder??
I never could do the weight n mouth toss..

AceArcher 05-20-2013 08:29 PM

more lead = faster fall rate = higher catch percentage = more expensive nets have more weight

Soak your cast nets for a day in a mixture of a 1/2 cup of fabric softener and 3 gallons of water in a 5 gallon bucket. Then rinse with fresh water. This will leave the net much more supple and easier to throw.

I always hold with my 2 hands to stay DRY most of the day instead of over shoulder. I never hold it in my teeth that would make me throw up.
