Shrimping help
 

Hey guys I need some help. I don't know much about shrimping...I know how to cast net for bait shrimp but have never went out with the intention of filling a cooler up. Any pointers? Obviously I need to go behind the weirs but are there certain places that hold shrimp better than others?

When the shrimp start running you will see where everyone is throwing. It's get packed back there!

I suggest bringing some sort of bait, like pogeymeal and flour.

pogey meal is a definate help. makes a huge difference.

I seen some guys using dog food patties at the boat launch one day, anyone try that?

Don't bring a big cooler......You are only allowed 5 gallons of shrimp per boat when shrimping on a Refuge.

Gerald I think when the season is open you are allowed 50lbs, whens it's closed you are allowed 10.

You're allowed 25 lbs during open shrimp season in the refuge not 50 lbs. During closed season you're allowed 10 lbs. A 5 gallon bucket full of shrimp would be about 25 lbs, but bring a spring scale and weigh your catch just to be sure. Some of the warden's don't take ignorance for an excuse.

This is from the Cameron Prairie web site. Be sure to us a 5 gallon bucket.....NOT a 6 or 7 gallon bucket.

• How do you get to the East Cove Unit?
  The East Cove Unit is only accessible by boat. The entrance is located through the Grand Bayou Boat Bay at the southeast corner of Calcasieu Lake. A map of the refuge can be obtained from the Visitor Center at Cameron Prairie NWR.

• Is a fishing license needed to go crabbing?
  Any person using crab lines or drop nets for the purpose of taking crabs for recreational purposes is not required to purchase or possess a basic recreational fishing license. Only cotton line and drop nets up to 24” outside diameter may be used. Floats on crab lines are prohibited.

• What is the limit on shrimp?
  The daily shrimp limit is five gallons of heads-on shrimp per day, per vehicle or boat during the Louisiana inshore waters shrimp season. Outside the season, when cast netting for bait, the limit is one gallon per day, per vehicle or boat.

• Is the Grand Bayou Boat Bay open?
  That information is accessible 24 hours a day by calling the East Cove Hotline 855-532-9955. When the boat bay is closed and/or there is a Closed sign, the refuge is closed to all public use.
