A little nervous.
Go an offer for another job. Will be a rig inspector. I have never done the offshore thing. I know this will only be going out there and coming right back in. But, how do you guys handle being away from the family that often. I have two boys (2 & 4) that I have to think about. Just wondering your opinions.

The time off with them is that much better. I work 5-2 and I don't spend nearly the amount of time with my kids that my good friend does who works 7-7.
|
I'm sure you will adapt as will they.
That said, I took a helluva paycut to get to come home and raise my kids. I was also gone for weeks and months at a time though. It doesn't sound like you'll be away that long. |
Its easier than you would think. The first hitch is the worst but then after you truely realize that when you are home with your family for 2-4 weeks you are completely free to do as you wish. Its like having 6 months of vacation every year.
|
It is what you make of it - plain and simple. After years of shift work and missing holidays, I longed for a Mon-Fri job. Now, I find myself missing the days off during the week to do things. Go figure!

depends on the person
for me ...I love offshore and 7 on 7 off... you work 1/2 the year and home the other half you make the good money only working half the time Down falls you miss things like kids baseball games, dances, etc some holidays and your with guys for 7 days in close quarters Once you work for a company long enough you will have vacation time which you can knock off some weeks working...instead of working 26 weeks a year you only work 25,24,23 I have been with my company going on 14 years and if I wanted to use all my vacation I would only have to work 21 weeks a year |
Thanks for the advise. I have an interview today. I guess I am going for it. Any of you have experience with inspectors or what their job is like?
|
What kind of inspector are you applying for? Is it a job with BSEE?
|
Its Derrick and Rig inspections for a company out of brousard called Loadmaster.

Short hitches are great, especially having that time off when your home. No way I would do it if I had to be at the office or shop on my days off though, went through that for 4 years and it is absolutely not worth it.
A true on off rotation can't be beat, having a week straight with your family to go an do whatever the hell you want affords you more quality time with your family in reality. You miss them for a while, and get time to yourself (guys need this) then when you get back I found the time spent was way better than the Saturday/Sunday and week nights with all the hustle. If I could fin something laying what I make now I would jump on a 7-7 in a heartbeat. |
I know what you mean. I currently work and 8-5 and still feel that time with my boys is limited. I had my interview yesterday and it looks good. I should hear something by next week. It looks like a really good opportunity. I think I am making a good decision. All of your input really helped. Thanks!

Well I did it. Last day at my current job is today. Tomorrow I will be taking physicals and all of that fun stuff. Wish me luck!
|
Hope you like working up high , alot of climbing involved in that job.
|
I think I will be ok. Things like that have never bothered me before. This job means better money and a means to advance. I have gone from nervous to a little excited. This will be good for me.
