choosing topwater color

Wanted to see if anyone would chime in on this. I never really do that great on top water, and wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions on when to throw what color. I have caught em on a bone skitterwalk, but never not one bite on anything else. Bright days, bright colors? clear water, clear colors? That's what I usually try, is this right? really want to try to figure out top water this year.

Have several different colors but always throw either white or clown. Bought some bigger top waters last year from salty cannot recall what they was called but they also caught fish.

I wear the paint off of a topwater in two days so my best color is what ever ot is before its painted or it starts sinking

I like darker baits early in the morning and on over cast conditions. ( gold mullet skitter / clown color spooks) when it's bright out I like something with chrome or bone color. Spectrum Color spook jr and pink/chrome in clear water. But everyone has a preference.

Salty says color doesn't matter, it's all presentation. But, he still paints them.
