West of Holly Beach

Today the winds were as forcast.....but the water quality so.so....

There was bait in most places between the Holly Beach rocks all the way down to Maes beach [to the far west].

I started at the rock breakers and I tried several different TW baits at first light and did not even get a blowup. I switched to soft plastic with the same results. There was another guy near me and he was trying live bait. He told me something was taking his bait, but he had not caught anything.

A yacker caught some bait and then went out just past the breakers. I watched him fish 4 or 5 spots in 20 minutes and never saw him act like he got a bite. There were 3 people wading 1/2 mile to the east, but they left after fishing for 45 minutes.

The day was not looking good.

I started moving west and talked with several people that had not caught anything. I finaly stopped at one spot that had several vehicles and 6 or 8 people wading. I talked to one person and he told me that some of the people had caught a trout or 2.

It was 9:30 AM and I had not felt any fish hit my bait.....but that changed after making a few cast. I caught a nice 15" Speck. In the next 3+ hours I caught 6 specks and had several get off after short fights.

I did not "tear them up" but had a good pile of meat as a result of my trip to the Beach.

Cut from just behind the anus down to the center bone and then go back towards the head until you reach the gill area... then just filet as normal... you lose a little bit of meat but it goes a little faster and eliminates almost all of the small bones.

You may have a few rib bones to clean off the fillet, but you miss the swim bladder, or whatever it is, that is a pain in the azz to cut.
