One of the best motors yamaha ever built....very strong holeshot and midrange and known for great reliability if maintained properly. IMO there is zero cons.

How bout the ox66 vmax 200?

Montauk17 07-04-2013 10:12 PM

Great motor too....basically the same block but fuel injected instead of carb.

Are the merc opti's as bad as what I have been reading? Why the poor resale? 2008 and newer 200-250hp is what I'm looking at.

We have a 2001 model just like this and love it!
One of the main reasons I have not began looking at buying a new rig is because this motor runs so good it would be very hard to get rid of it.

As Montauk said every motor needs routine maintenance.
Everytime our mechanic comes to do routine maintenance on it he tells us to let him know first if we ever want to sale it. Apparently they are much easier to work on then the newer yamahas.

This motor has never let us down and we trust it enought to bring us 40 miles offshore.

It pushes our 19' DeepV Mako and runs 36 mph loaded down. We have a 4 blade prop on it though.

Getting approx 2.5 mpg loaded down cruising at 25 mph in a 1' - 2' chop.

Merc's quality control is the main problem....I have seen people blow 3 powerheads in one year. I also worked on WLF boats with several thousand hours without a serious issue. Most of merc's parts are made in china and mexico where quality control is an issue.

Think I have a lot of risk buying a 2010 225 opti? I would think that if the motor had the issues they would be worked out by now, no?

How many hours, 40/80/200?

Problems might not have reared themselves yet with just a few hours.
Most people sell newer outboards because they causing them problems or they not powerful enough.

What kind of boat you putting it on?

You take a risk buying any used motor bro....best thing I can tell you is to have a merc dealer do a compression test and run the computer to check the hours, overheats, and over rev's. The computer does not lie...
