Biblical Theology of Fishing

God made the heavens and the earth. He owns the cattle on a thousand hills, and he owns the fish in all of the seas. If you want to catch fish, you should ask him for them in prayer. (Genesis 1-2, Matthew 7, James 1)

From Psalm 8

From the lips of infants and children you have ordained praise, because of your enemies to silence the foe and the avenger ...

When I consider the heavens, the works of your hands, what is man that you care for him, the son of man, that you are mindful of him?

You made him a little lower than all of the angels, and crowned him with glory and honor to rule over your creation, over the birds of the air, and the beasts of the land, and the fish of the seas, all that swim in the paths of the seas.

Part of man's dominion over the earth is dominion over the fish. But man's dominion is under God's authority, so you need to ask God for fishing success. Which of you, if your son asks for a fish, would give him a snake? How much more will your father in heaven give good gifts to you?

God reckons fish as "good gifts" even though there are more important things.

God also delights in making fathers look good in front of their children, especially as they take the lead as priests and kings in their families by teaching children to pray for their daily bread (and fish!)

Prayer is so key to my success that my children will not let us leave the driveway without praying for fishing success. We've done the "control group" thing too many times in the (distant) past by forgetting to pray.

So praise Jesus and pass the cracked crab.

I used to always pray for a safe fishing trip but in my own human pride, I never asked God for success in catching fish. I thought that God had much more important requests to deal with than my fishing. A fishing buddy once asked me if I was limiting God's powers, after all, He knows the number of hairs on your head and every sparrow that falls from the sky. (Matt 10:29-30) Now I do ask for fishing success as well as fishing safety. Of course, I don't limit out every time but there seems always to be enough fish in my freezer to share with others.

Great post. He tells us to pray about everything big and small. I don't always do it but hopefully I'm getting better.

Genesis 1:26
26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals,[a] and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

People ask why I hunt and fish and I always refer to them to this verse. And knowing that its something I believe we we should do and I enjoy it very much, why not.. "Ruling over the fish of the sea and birds of the sky"
