anyone hunt in Winn Parish?

Looking at a lease up there, how is the hunting? lots of deer? antler size? we hunt in Arkansas now and want something closer to home. We see and kill quite a few in Arkansas just not very big antlers.

I hunt a few miles north in jackson parish and we have plenty of deer. I never killed any monsters but my gpaw and others have. We have some hogs but not enough to worry about taking over.

I hunt off of hwy 34 in Winn. We do pretty good. Are you looking at the club with the superior guys?

BassAssasin 09-16-2013 08:21 AM

we are looking at trying to purchase a couple hundred acres

Finfeatherfur 09-16-2013 08:26 AM

If you purchase it and control access to the property, you will do ok. I was recently in the Atlanta Hunting Club by the prison and it was not worth the $1K/year fee. Deer density was low, and once dog season opened it was over.

BassAssasin 09-16-2013 08:38 AM

wait they run dogs in the area???

Montauk17 09-16-2013 08:59 AM

In north la they live and die to hunt with dogs. Most of them barley hunt until dog season opens. They dog hunt on our lease but for the most part stay away from the coonazzes still hunting. It can actually work in your favor sometimes. My gpaw killed a nice 12 point a few years ago when they were running dogs,he killed it sitting in his box stand.

I have been hunting up there since I was a kid. It is getting better and better. I have looked at several pieces of property to buy up there and can’t find anything I want. The property you are looking at would not happen to be the tracks that are for sale in the Caney creek bottom?

BassAssasin 09-16-2013 10:12 AM

could be, its like 500 acres. Is there something I should know about that piece?

I will go back and look at for the listing for the one I looked at last year. They had several sections of land together. I went look at it once during the fall and then again during the winter. A good part of the land was flooded the second time I went look at it. Don’t get me wrong it was a beautiful place, but the flooding worried me a little.

I've been on a club up there for 6 years now and have no complaints. Haven't killed any big deer myself but have seen some nice ones taken. We had one go over 150" last year. We also do not run dogs on our club. Only time dogs are allowed is after deer season to hog hunt.
