Yep, now a state law that you can only travel in the left lane if you are passing somebody up. A co-worker just called and told us that he got a ticket for that on his way to Golden Meadow this morning!

Drive safe. Sorry for your loss.

ShadMan 11-14-2009 11:24 AM

If you are in the left lane and someone passes you on your right, you will get a ticket for impeding the flow of traffic (up to $275). You'll see signs all over Texas that say either "Left lane for passing only" or "Slower traffic keep right". They mean the same thing. If you're doing 85mph and someone comes up behind you at 90mph and you aren't passing, you have to move over. ;)

Besides that, some big Bubba like me in a big Bubba truck may run you off the road for blocking the left lane. It's our new state pastime, and I am one of the best. :p If you drove in the left lane the whole time and were going under 85, you're lucky to be alive right now. :) Oh, and remember to "Drive Friendly" in the Lone Star State.

driving in tejas

Freaked me out watching folks take the shoulder of the hwy. at 70 and 80 mph to let others pass last time we went to dallas.

Red Devil 11-14-2009 12:43 PM

What's the dang speed limit in TX?????? If you are sppeding at 85 and someone runs up on you, then they are speeding as well. But yet you get a ticket if someone slows down because you are impedeing traffic doing the posted speed limit. Doesn't make sense to me.

It's called common courtesy. ;) If you don't give up the left lane, you are forcing faster traffic into the slower lanes, which makes you the most dangerous driver on the highway. The fine for impeding the flow of traffic is quite a bit higher than the fine for speeding for that reason. Don't move over for a cop and you'll probably get a ticket for impeding and for speeding. :p

eman - You aren't required to move to the shoulder to let someone pass. The info above is only when there is more than one lane travelling in the same direction. However, most Texans do move to the shoulder to let faster traffic pass out of courtesy.

Good info Shad. Thanks for clarifying. Wish LA would follow suit on that one. We got some people over here that have no business being behind the wheel. Another law I like is the one I've seen posted in MS where semis have to stay in the right lane. How many times have you gotten behind two of them side by side for 20 miles. Can you say road rage?????????????

This law has actually been in place for a number of years now. Blanco passed it the same day that she passed the helmet law. I believe she did this late in 04 or early 05. It's just that no one has EVER enforced it!:pissed:

ACT 190 (Effective August 15, 2009), requiresthatany person operating a motor vehicle on a multi lane roadway (including interstates) must travel in the right lane and shall not drive in the left lane except under the following conditions:
· If the motorist must travel in the left lane, it shall not be at a speed less than that of a vehicle traveling in the right lane.
· Vehicles preparing for a left turn at an intersection, private road or driveway,
· When passing another vehicle that is traveling in the same direction below the posted speed limit
· When the right lanes are congested
· When emergency vehicles are parked on or near the right shoulder and have their emergency lights activated.
· When directed otherwise by law enforcement.
