Rutherford Bull Reds

Hit Rutherford Beach last Fri and Sat. No crab to be had, so we fished cut mullet. Managed 4 bull reds Fri, 2 on Sat fishing about 3 hours each day. 4 of 6 fish were on the 12 ft rods which cast a bit further out, so it seems that casting distance is important there, just as it is at Holly. Good times.

The spot we picked was just 300 yards or so E of the end of Rutherford Beach Road, not to far from the porta potties. Are there better spots out there? The beach is very long and it all looked about the same to me. A catch rate of 1 bull red every hour or so seems about the same as Holly Beach: not too shabby for cut mullet, but if there is a better spot along that long stretch of beach it would be nice to know.

I usually fish just to the west of the camp closest to beach

Head to the west anywhere from 3 to 7 miles. The guts are deeper down there.

?

You can tell where the water is deeper by watching the wave breaks. Once you head west a couple of miles it is also easier to get down on the beach itself.

No sarcasm was intended. I appreciate the input. The first day out, we had a N wind, and the waves weren't breaking at all.

You'll find when you get down west a few miles that you won't need to cast near as far out. In the past we have been able to cast to the 3rd gut (6' to 7' deep) with 7ft casting rods and ambassador 6000s. In the summer time we catch trout in the 1st and 2nd gut and bull reds in the 3rd gut without ever getting our feet wet. We caught finger mullet in the roadside ditch south of hwy 82 on the road down to the beach and used that for bait.

That would be sweet.

PM or text once you have dates. April is looking full for us, so we'll try and make another trip in March so we don't have to wait until May.

Will do brother. Gona keep an eye on the weather. The weather should make a turn for the better in the coming month. I hope we can get a day worked out bro.
