Boat detailer

It's been well over a year since I've had my bay boat in the water and let's just say the elements and lack of care has taken a toll on the fiberglass. After doing some research, I decided to try and clean, compound, and wax it. I stopped at Harbor Freight Friday topick up a dual action polisher and the boat gods must have been smiling down on me. I struck up a conversation with a guy who was picking up some buffing pads and he started telling me about his polisher and how it's been a great tool for him. He asked what I was detailing and he gave me that "he's in over his head" look when I told him. Noticing his smirk, I asked him what he does for a living and he just happened to say detailing! I asked what he charges and he said he would have to take a look at it so he followed me to my house to see the damage. He took a look and quoted me to wash, compound the exterior, and wax it. Ready for this????? $120 . I yelled out "SOLD!" I dropped the boat off at his house that night and he called me yesterday at lunch yesterday to tell me that it was ready! Here are some before shots........

Now I'm not going to lie. I was nervous all that night and Saturday morning. I started thinking how stupid am I to drop off my boat to some guys house that I had just met at Harbor Freight of all places. This guy could be lying and mess up the boat even more (not that it could have been much worse) or even worse.... Steal the damn thing!! He called me Saturday mid-morning to update me on the progress and said he'll try and have it ready Sunday if the rain holds out. Sunday he calls me and tells me the rain got him so it will be ready Monday. Sure enough he calls me on my lunch break and said she's ready to go. I drove over and was shocked at teh work he did for $120. He detailed it fairly nicely. There are some rust stains and what not that he couldn't get off, but I'll try with some Star Brite or something later. He compounded the blue to a nice shine and wet sanded some of the really bad areas. Then he followed up with a wax. I'm sure if I had brought it to an actual shop it would have been like new, but no telling how much that would have ran. I have the guys name and number for anyone who is interested. He details cars, boats, RV's, and some paint and body. He may be able to come to your house, but I'm not 100% on that. Here are some of the after pictures he sent me. I can get some better ones later with the sun out more.

I did and I even threw in a nice tip for him. I really felt bad giving him just $120 for that.

Lake Chuck Duck 02-26-2014 08:59 AM

Ok now go buy you a tarp or a boat cover. Good lord dude!

MarshRat89 02-26-2014 09:09 AM

Still gonna sell it now? Lol...... Man that's like $15 an hour. That's a $300 job minimum anywhere else.

I'm still thinking about it. With work, the family, and that busted @$$ camp I haven't had time to do much fishing at all. Once Jr gets a litttle bigger I would like to start taking him, but I'll probably start out with areas closer to Lafayette so it's not as hard on him. I would like to get something a little smaller and possibly aluminum that I can still go hit Big Lake and what not.

I detailed my truck a few weekends ago....... $120 is a frigging bargain. That's a lot of work.

haoward 02-26-2014 10:46 AM

Supply will cost at least $50 plus I hate doing the bottom of the boat. Pain in the ***
