How does this happen?

My mom called and said they have her husband in the hospital with chest, shoulder, neck and head pain. He has been in a nursing home for 10 yrs and wheelchair ridden for about 9 yrs. He cant even stand by himself much less even try to stand. Couple weeks ago she called me and said one of the nurses hit him. Mom went to the nursing home to find out and they both said don't know what to believe with his state of mind and just let it go. Now back to this morning, Mom called me back about 30 minutes later and said that my stepdads neck was broke. How can someone who is in a wheelchair for that long who cant even stand by himself?

well it is quite possible depending on the condition of his bones. Im sure they are extremely weak just from reabsorption. Now you need to talk to the Dr. about what it looks like on xray/ct. He can tell you if its a from natural or from abuse. I mean its not 100% if its abuse but he could definitely rule out a fracture just from extremely brittle bones

ya you cant know exactly whats going on but if it were me I would set up a nanny cam in his room (if it can be hidden where they wont steal it) just to be sure whats going on when no one is around. the trouble is my experience is the nurses steal everything of any worth that patients have so if its a stuffed animal camera they will surely steal it.

those care nurses can be pretty rough even when not intending to and some do abuse the elderly if they are forced to clean up after them so you need to know if its just one nurse or more then one or if he moves around and just falls out of bed or something like that.

They are transfering him to Memorial Herman downtown and advised mom not to come right away because they are putting him in isolation to do something they cant do here. We are going to the nursing home with medical report in hand and be calling the sheriffs department to investigate.

Well we found out some info. One test came back that he has bone cancer which in turn made his bones real brittle. They think he just turned his head the wrong way it just broke. The spine specialist is coming tomorrow and more tests to find out exactly what happened. They expect surgery but very worried if he will make it through it. Thanks to everyone here.

Well the eurologist called and said his bladder is full of cancer too. They are taking skin from his back and stomach to see if the cancer is in his spine. They are going to see if his neck will heal without the surgery if not they will do the surgery.
