New 16x48 & Tohatsu 40 4-Stroke
 

Pop's just picked up his new boat!

Ended up switching to a 16x48 Alweld w/ new 40hp Tohatsu 4-Stroke after checking out the report made from CajunChristian. Hope to drop it in the water on Friday to start the break in. This thing is nice!

I'll give some feedback after this weekend.

If you don't mind me asking, about how much does a rig like that cost?

I'll have to look over the invoice to be sure but it's around $12,000 w/ all extras (pretax)

First: I am humbled that you would spend that much money on my word.
Second: You will soon see me running that Tohatsu on a 1552 AlWeld from Lake Area. Taking bids now on the rocket I currently drive.
Third: If you need help hooking up a tach and/or a water pressure gauge, let me know. I personally feel that a water pressure gauge is the most important gauge a marsh fisherman can have. They are too inexpensive to not have one.
Fourth: I only got to run that motor for a few hours. It was the most pleasurable outboard I have ever run. The hole shot will scare you. It is so quiet, you wouldn't think there would be much power there.
It is so ergonomic, long tiller handle, key, trim, shift on the handle. Motor even has a fitting on the side to hook a water hose to flush the salt water out of the motor.
In every brand of boat I have ever tested, the 15' boat was about 3 mph faster than the 16' boat. It has more to do with the fulcrum point than the weight. We just cannot make a 16' run with a 15'. That said, most folks love the extra room of the 16' boat. It's up to you to decide how much you want to compromise for the length.

I'm hoping for 39-40mph out of it. Ended up with the Yamaha 15 pitch prop. They suggested that prop for what we will be using it for.

GREAT prop. It is a neck snapper on that motor. That semi cleaver design also likes to run very high. That Yamaha prop is actually the highest running prop that you can logically run in the marsh. Only prop that will run higher is a true surfacing cleaver, and those are not logical to run in the marsh, hole shot is terrible with a full cleaver. I have one of those thin Yamaha props that is over 20 years old, still going strong. They use excellent stainless steel.

Did some breaking in on the motor Friday & Today (did a little fishing today too).

This thing has some serious low end torque & will get up in a hurry! Have only done 2 short full throttle runs. Right now the boat w/ no jack plate has some serious cavitation.

We just installed a jackplate on it this afternoon and will go run it again on Wednesday & hopefully get it setup right. It is very fuel efficient. We ran it for 3 hours varying the throttle the whole time Friday and it only burnt 2 gallons of gas.

Just ordered a 1748 with the 4 stroke 40 tohatsu from lake area should be 2-4 weeks to get it can't wait to see what she's got also the 15 pitch ya mama prop

Well we think we finally got the motor setup pretty close. We ended up with a jack plate from Southside w/ a 6" set back. The other jack plate we tried had a 9 1/2" set back. Now things seem to be running a lot better.

I was able to hit 38mph w/ myself, 20qt. K2, tackle bag, & 3 rods.

We ended up having to move a battery up front and mover the other battery to the left side.

Like we have proven several hundred times, a 16' boat will run 4-5 mph slower than the exact same boat in a 15' length. So you have about all you'll get out of it and that is running very nice at that speed.

I just hung one on the back of War Eagle for a guy. It will be interesting to see how it runs. He had an original Mega. He didn't realize that you cannot start and run an outboard with a frozen water pump in 10 degree weather. A lost Cajun in Arkansas:D

I still wanna get with you one day and let you come ride/run it and make sure you think we are at the right spot.

Hey BA if you would like to try the 16 pitch like we ran on the 1548 you are more than welcome to try it. You will lose a little hole shot with a loaded boat but you can possibly pick up a little more speed. We just need to make sure that you don't drop to low on RPMs or become a slug out of the hole. Let me know and we can go run it because I would like to know as well.
