Boat problems..need help

So my engine, power pole, and jackplate wont work, everything else on the boat gets power and the trim works on the motor, just not from the throttle lever. I started it less than a month ago, so this happened recently. The battery is charged. Sounds like this is some kind of fuse or relay, I just dont know where to look on a boat for that kind of stuff. Any help would be appreciated.

start at the battery and follow the wires until you find a box, that's usually where they branch off accessories with fuses

you better list the boat, engine, and type of power pole for us so someone has a better idea what type of electrical wiring you might have there and can help you.

if you have trouble tracing the wires then start at the power pole and follow those wires back to where they go and you should find a relay, then follow the relay wires to the fuse.

does the motor still run?

Check for power to the ignition switch and check for power from the switch when its turned on. That will give you an idea if its before the switch or switch itself.

boat is a triton lts with a suzuki 250. motor doesnt even make a sound

Perko switch not making contact. Take a small piece of copper wire and bypass the switch to troubleshoot.

well since your power pole dont work, you can donate it to me....

My boat has one two post reset/breaker in line for the motor and another for accessories. The breaker wasn't tripping on mine it had corroded the inside and that was my issue. New one was 8 bucks.

Question. How do ya know your battery is charged? Reason I ask is my onboard said mine was charged before and the charger had a bad connection at the fuse and it wasn't really charging. If you have a perko switch that may possibly be an issue. I don't know what u have tried.

I've seen these little bugers cause ppl to scratch their head. But if he is getting power to one thing it shouldn't be that... Right?

It would appear to me to be a ground issue.

Em591991 04-22-2014 09:53 PM

My next boat, wired/rigged by me and only me. Shotty craftsmanship drives me nuts.

got the jackplate and the pp working, it was the 2 pole breaker. Still have no power to throttle trim switch and key.

Are u useing a multimeter. .

.?

If so check fuses track down were power stops.

I had the same thing my eve 50 hp from 1984 has a fuse if it blowers nothing will work.

But the fuse was good I checked with multimeter
It wound up being the connection to the fuse. Corroded under connector .

Result I have wires running all over with easy acces with multimeter

If you don't have one let me know you can pass by I will help you. Take a hbrake from a meat sale and drag her here. I got a rabbit ear hooked up reedy to go for water. Bean working on my boat too. I got ignition switch issues too a gost . But I know where it's at now. Gust need to crimp connectors better .

that could be as simple as the kill switch lanyard, bypass it and see if that fixes it, if so you just have to get a new one.

sounds like you might have a few problems so "if it were me" and you wanted reliability so nothing fails on the water on you, I would seriously consider rechecking all the electrical connections and replacing all those switches and breakers out so you have no more issues.

when salt water corrosion and rust usually take out one switch or breaker the others arent that far behind before failing as well.

I have one thanks for the offer. I'm about to start testing wires after I get some work done

If he has NO power it shouldn't be a kill switch. Maybe a ground for the key switch.
