Opinions on Gator Tail / Subaru ??
 

Lookin at a 2013 28 hp with 19 hours on it. Bout to the pull the trigger. Anyone ever owned one of these? I've ran multiple GTR 35 Vanguards. On their website it only lists a 25 Subaru but this is a 28? Thanks for any input. (BTW I'm a mechanically handicapped so explain it like you would to your wife, or dog...)

Its more than likely just down rated because it is marketed for people that hunt refuges where they have hp restrictions. Personally if it were me I'd go with the 35hp because its I've seen the 25 in action and they just don't have the digging power to get you out of a bind when needed. I have the 35 with a stage 1 on my 17' boat and I couldn't be happier with it.

What is done with the stage 1 and how much did it help you? I have a stock 35GTR and was thinking about having something done.

I have a 35 Mud Buddy hyper sport that I have done a big upgrade on. SS crossover exhaust, mikuno carb, new intake. Moved the power up to around 42-43 hp. Huge difference. Now I am running at 5-6000' altitude so I have a fair bit of power drop compared to running down at sea level. That said a 28hp mud motor, depending on the boat, is not any too much power, and may be underpowered. I can't really talk apple to apples with a GTR but in Mud Buddy parlance my upgrades were stage 1 (exhaust) and stage 2 (engine internals). As I understand it, in general a stage 1 upgrade is all external bolt on replacement parts. Even a mechanical idiot like me could do it. Stage 2 is an internal engine thing and requires a bit of knowledge and the right tools (not many). I had a buddy help me with my Stage 2 as he used to rebuild motorcycle engines. Even with that experience it took us about 20 hours to do the Stage 2 but I would highly recommend it. Huge improvement in the ability to move a load.

Like I said...that 25gtr on the right boat will still run 29-30 mph and still haul a decent load....it may struggle a little in the thick stuff but it'll go...get on youtube and look up instagator's 25 and boat he builds specifically for that 25 and I think you'll be impressed...

It will be on a 15' x 42" flat as of now. 4 people and 2 dogs from time to time lol. But from the launch to my blind is around a 1/2 mile. So as long as she'll start and kick in gear, I'll be satisfied. Now my buddy on the other hand, is a hug fan of fast s**t lol. So he might be interested in getting a few more horses out of it. He's actually en route to run it at the guys house now. Not sure what boat he has it on at the time, but sometime this week we will throw it on my boat and test her out. I'll be sure to give a report. Thanks for all the info guys.

Four guys and two dogs plus gear. That aint no lol matter. Dare say that boat is not only overloaded but WAY overloaded. Even if you only have to run 1/2 mile from the launch to your blind.

I ran that same boat with a home made long tail that was heavy as s**t for 4 seasons at my other lease. About a 3 mile run, 1/2 mile across BIG water. Up to 5 people with 2 dogs. Sketchey? at times, yes, very lol. But never sank it.

Poor folks got poor ways.

I would make 2 trips most days though lol

that 25 will be faster than a long tail but its gonna struggle on a boat that small with that load...it'll run better on a light 17/46 hull
