Holly Beach Seaweed Battle

You really couldn't fish Holly Beach for the latest 48 hours. It turned into drinking a few cold ones, and enjoying the sound of the waves. So Monday evening, a little outflow boundary pushed through late in the afternoon and briefly swung the wind to the north. That, and the fast falling tide provided me with a couple of hours where it looked worth it to throw a line in. I tossed a couple chunks of mullet out, popped the rod in a holder, and took a walk with my wife, "knowing", I wasn't catching anything. I showed back up 30 minutes later to a wildly bending rod. Game on. After a fairly short fight, I had a nice 18 pound red on the bank. I played around a bit more with no luck. Oh well, it was a fun ride!

It's tough out there right now. The seaweed is thick as of today. I learned another valuable lesson today. Don't park your campervan on Holly Beach if a giant thunderstorm is on the way. I was under the impression that the water would run off quickly. I was wrong. Thankfully one of the guys cleaning the seaweed dug a trench, and the water dropped to where we could get out. Saved my stupid butt! Such a stupid mistake, but it surely won't happen again.

And that shot doesn't do the seaweed justice. That was near low tide, and I was behind the main wall of seaweed.

Glad you won the battle. Great fish. Congrats.

That's a nice bull bro. The seaweed makes for some tough to impossible fishing. Glad you got your bull. Maybe time for some mud grips on the rv bro.lol

Is the seaweed only bad on the beach or is it still bad in the water?

It was still thick in the water yesterday afternoon. And I'm already on the hunt for a 4 wheel drive campervan!

A little late to the party...

I went out surf fishing on Saturday at Holly Beach. Had to wade out about 30 yards but got past the seaweed. Caught 6 nice sized Gafftop and 2 nice bull red (32" & 41"). I would have fished more (bait fish was popping everywhere) but had a shark swim by about 25' from me. Figured it had been a good enough day so went ahead and packed up.

Went offshore today and the seaweed was thick from the jetties all the way out to 20 miles. Large mats and tons of scattered grass.

I think it's still growing.

Headin' to Gulf Breeze beach today. What's the seaweed status?

I'm sure it has been cleaned yet. At best it may have stopped coming in. I rode all the beaches last weekend on the 4 wheeler. I know last week from halfway between Constance and Gulf Breeze it started smelling like butt. It got worse as you went west. Better bring a gas mask. It looked like there wasn't a person at Gulf Breeze.
