Nice haul. you find em on a rig or wreck?

Hightower 06-17-2014 08:33 AM

Nice catch! We caught about a dozen or so in the VM block a few weeks ago with cut bait. Our biggest was just under 12lbs. Gonna target them this weekend with live bait...

rustyb 06-17-2014 08:35 AM

We caught em on a rig. We are headed to grand isle and will target them weather permitting. These were small. No size.

How far did you have to go out?

I've got a 22' triton LTS and I want to venture a little ways off shore for something other than reds and trout...

20 miles. 18 ft scout

No kidding? I don't know much about off shore. Wait. Nothing, I know nothing about fishing off shore. I've done it a few times, but never gone in my boat and used my tackle. Looks like I may need to start a thread....:*****:

You really have to watch the weather patterns and make sure there are little to no chance of storms. I've gone offshore in small boats most of my life. But gotta be very mindful of the weather. And south winds.

You got more balls than me. Weather is always an issue but going out there with one engine is my concern. Nice catch BTW

Ever watch Wicked Tuna or see a shrimp boats head offshore. Most of those are single engines.

Indeed, but those boats have high freeboard/transom, self bailing decks and are designed to take on a significant sea if the engine is disabled. Have I ventured offshore in single engined outboard boats? Yes, I have, but they were hulls designed for the seas I would expect to possibly encounter. Would I venture out 20+ miles in my 24' bayboat? Naw....I'll pass....I'm not that mad at the snapper anymore:). JMO

as techonlogy has gotten better I am less concerned about single engines.......four strokes seem to be rock solid.

Most failures today are electronic. That being said ........two engines broke is about the same as one engine broke.

now, old two stokes and inline sixs then hell yea two was better than one........

Agree

In my 19 ft. Frontier, we have been, many times, out to EI 74, which I believe is about 25-30 miles out with no problems, but we always watch the forecast carefully. On several occasions, we have turned around at the landing believing that "discretion is the better part of valor".
