Stern light

I need some stern light facts. I need to change mine on my bay boat. I see people (especially guides) with them permanently mounted to the cowling of their outboard. Is this high enough, due to the height of the center console, to be legal? If so, where do you find these lights?

Saw some at Jerry's the other day. As far as legality? No idea but as you said there are a lot of people that does it.

Not legal. Must be visible 360°. However it is hardly ever enforced. Jerry's does have them.

In order to be visible 360* it would have to extend above the highest point in the boat (center console). Correct?

Correct
