v8 vs. ecoboost

what do ya'll f150 guys think? fixing to buy a new truck and wanting to get opinions and reviews on the engine. the heaviest thing i'll be pulling is a 22'bayboat.

I have an 2013 Eccoboost I get around 18-20mpg average, I pulled a 21' Kenner to GI this summer 11.5mpg round trip when i made it back to New Iberia

I have an eco boost with 55k miles. 4X4 Trouble free. It blows away the 5.0 in towing. But after that they are very close in everything else. Fuel mileage is about the same. If you dont drive it hard fuel mileage may be a lil better than a v8,but not much. Where it shines is towing. I pull a 38ft toy hauler fifth wheel that weighs in at 14,500. It pulls it like a diesel and makes 9.5 mpg. I also tow a 25ft bay boat and towing it it makes 11-12 mpg. Whenever the turbos spool up it takes more fuel. A couple of friends have the same truck with v8 and they are similar. But when it comes to towing no comparison. All stock except for air bags in rear for towing camper.

ecoboost by far

but if youre gonna be pulling a big load all the time why not just get a diesel? 9mpg is pretty crabby for a 500 mile trip lol

Got an ecoboost and it pulls my bay boat just fine.

However, you might want to watch this clip for a better view of ford, :)

why pay diesel prices when the ecoboost pulls just as good?

lol yeah lets see who can pull more, my 5.9 cummins or an eco boost.

Ed32 09-10-2014 08:19 AM

i think i'm going to get the v8. i don't pull that much that often.

v8 vs. ecoboost

Don't think ford offers a big v8 in f150. And the 5.0 pulls normal loads fine

haha I was being sarcastic. I have a duramax and couldn't believe he really thinks it will keep up with a diesel. I can pull 5th wheel camper with a bay boat behind it and still get 12mpg. I want to see ecoboost do that!!

I said like a diesel not better. Don't get crazy
I traded my 2012 dodge diesel in on this truck.

I have an eco 4×4 with 25k miles. ECO is better than the 5.0 (more pick-up & towing capacity) and the crap Obama motors (GM) has now. I get 16-19 and 12 towing 22' bay boat. Only way I would not get the ECO boost is if I went with the 6.2 but they suck gas regardless if towing or not. My coworker has a 2012 f150 4×4 6.2 and he tells me he gets 14- 15 mpg max on interstate (not towing). I assume you can still get the 6.2 in F-150?

9 mpg isnt pulling good... also having to add bags and a programmer and intake and exhaust to pull a load isnt called pulling good either. not sure if he has it but lots do. a diesel would still get 14-15 mpg pulling that load which in the long term pays for itself in fuel.

pulls as good as a diesel.. lol i wish. i wouldnt be confused on what to buy if that was the case. 440 horsepower and 860 lb-ft of torque in the 2015 diesels is quite a lot more power... pretty much double.

BuckingFastard 09-10-2014 08:32 AM

i feel like im having dejavu on here for sure lol

If you are not hauling a big 5th wheel or working the truck hauling stock or plan the get a boat that requires the diesel I would get half ton gas. Just traded in my 08 duramax, on a chev 1500 4x4. The ride is better, fuel eco is better and there is always some extra cost in owning a diesel. It tows my boat and my tractor great

BuckingFastard 09-10-2014 09:17 AM

yea nobody needs a diesel unless they absolutely need a diesel. been there. my only dilemma is the fact that i need to pull an 18K+ 5th wheel. or i can just leave it parked and get a gas.

I just did the same thing (only got a Ford). With diesel prices 60-70 cents more than gasoline, it doesn't make sense to drive a diesel if you no longer need it.
It amazes me to see these kids with jacked up 3/4 ton rigs, big exhausts, probably chipped engines. How do they afford that crap?
And to get back to your question, I got the V8 just because I'm leery of a turbo engine. The V8 hauls my boat just fine, and it weighs about 2500 lbs.
Without a load, I'm getting about 19 mpg average. WIth the boat, it's about 15. Coming from a diesel, I can live with those numbers, and the ride is so much nicer. Like a car.
