shot this gar this weekend, i tell people 6'6" without honestly knowing.... we should one last year 6'3" right at a 100lbs(we weighed and measured).... then i shot this one friday night and i felt she was bigger..... Opinions? (it's not like a bass, can barely hold it up much less put it closer to the camera to make it look bigger lol

mriguy 09-22-2014 08:46 AM

Weighs about as much as the guy on the right is my guess

Armand16 09-22-2014 08:55 AM

Monster.. Def bigger than 100lbs. How does those taste?

mr crab 09-22-2014 09:06 AM

I'd say 130. Pure guess

Clampy 09-22-2014 09:25 AM

120 -130 for sure

calcutta37 09-22-2014 09:25 AM

Don't know if this is accurate..... I think the fish weighs more than 83#...

AlexOrtego 09-22-2014 11:08 AM

honestly, i put her at 6' 6" , a good bit taller than me at 5'9 maybe 5'10" with those boots on which is why i said 6' 6" , as far as weight, i put it at 120, def could see it being more but if i dont "know for certain" i try to go under on predictions unlock ol' Waltrip/ "W" lol

she was a beast, she had VERY under-developed eggs/obv they're starting to beging to "spawn" i would assume..... shot her in Grand Chenier

AlexOrtego 09-22-2014 11:10 AM

lol yeah, that chart is a joke " i watched one that was shot at toledo bend " get weighed first hand, fish was 6' 8" , #176 but it was WIDE!

Fish in Louisiana usually eat a lot better and weigh a lot more than the same species nationwide or in other states.

smooth move 09-22-2014 12:04 PM

how old do you think it was?

duckman1911 09-22-2014 12:24 PM

Nice fish bro. Congrats.

AlexOrtego 09-22-2014 04:48 PM

I would love to know an approximate age as well, not the FIRST CLUE OR REFERENCE, but a PURE guess, I would say 25+ years old

Thanks for input / info guys

The age is likely between 17 and 25. Counting the rings on the scales of alligator gar is not super accurate, but more accurate than guessing age based on estimated lengths from the photos.

All i have to add to this discussion is.... Wow.. what a beast!

Hell, I wish I had a boat! I don't even have a now bc two months after owning mine, it flew/bounced out the boat!

If we take your boat Aub, we can make some type of rig with a little thinking ha

Rings? I hope you're not referring to layers(like rattles on a snake) of scales/rings on this fish bc My God it would be way older than the values you're referring to
