Salinity Level Comparison Cypremort Point

2 Attachment(s)
Since Vermilion Bay has become a hot topic, I thought I might submit two charts taken from the NOAA website focusing on the salinity levels at Cypremort Point. The first chart is from November of last year during Thanksgiving week. Nice sized specks were being caught in the bay at this time. The second chart is the salinity level now. Prior to the front, the salinity level was between 0 and 1. With the salinity rising, the specks should start showing up at the Point if they haven't already. Once it pushes to 5, they should be there.

I have this link saved on my computer. It's a list of all the reporting stations in Louisiana. About half way down is Vermillion Bay. There are two stations. One at Cyp Point and one near Fearman lake.

I really don't think the salinity has much to do with the fall bite. I have caught them inside when it was 1-2ppt. Some articles I read say that they focus more on feeding up before the winter. They don't need super salty water like they do when they are spawning in the summmer months. The shorter days and cool fronts are a signal to start the push.

Red, compare water temp. As Montauk mentions, I have also caught specs in almost pure fresh water. They were almost golden instead of silver.

if you check the "Graph w/ stats" you can look at the average over the last 8 years. judging by the graph we are way behind this year in the way of salinity.

Great Post! I often use the salinity, at this time a year, as a guide to know when the trout should have arrived. The cool fronts and shorter days are also a good judge of when to go find them...What am I saying, I just go between teal and big duck season and usually have some of my better fishing trips!

LOL! Ya gonna be about 2 weeks late then if you wait for those reports.
Most fishermen are quite when the bite starts to keep the crowds down before letting the word out!

Agree 100%.....Best post on this topic yet. Those bay trout look like two totally different species from the trout outside. If salinity is high fish will be suspended. If low fish the bottom slowly.....No need for salinity charts in the fall....water clarity far more important.

Yep, I would take clarity over salinity any day.

Bunch of white trout from what I heard.

The bigger females are more sensitive to salinity than the males though... males can handle super low salinities. but hey... they fry up the same...haha..

The fish are moving in but just starting. Dinks, both whities and specs.

Was gonna spend the day around the point scouting but Alphaman talked me into going to the pass (was not hard, He said im headed to the pass. I said ok meet ya there.) Caught the majority of our fish around the point.

I fished almost every day this week and have noticed the average size growing by the day. Friday and yesterday were by far the biggest I have caught so far. Had a few 16" to 18" in the mix. Almost made it worth fighting the current and putting up with the pot lickers but not quite. I forgot what its like on the weekends when the trout start coming in.

Montauk17 09-28-2014 08:32 AM

I say another 1-2 weeks it will be good for specks. Best time to go if your limited to the weekend is sunday afternoons....will have the least amount of potlickers.
