New Boat Markup Pricing
 

I am looking to purchase my first new boat soon and was wondering how much under asking price the typical dealer will sell the boat. I dont want to go in there and ask for something way too low and get laughed at but also want to get a fair deal. I do plan on price shopping but was just wondering if anyone had any input who has been through the new boat buying experience.

From my experience the best time to buy a new boat is during is boat show season Jan-may. That's where you will see dicounts on boat and motor. What kind of boat your looking at

Check NADA. That will at least give you an idea about the invoice price, so you know what you're working with.

i bout a new 2011 skeeter in 2012. they knocked 4-5 k off. i dont know that i would buy the newest one out if you can get last years model for less

I am looking at a Blazer Bay 2170 and a Nautic Star 21XTS. I am now pretty much leaning towards the Nautic Star. I have read that to ask for about 20-30 percent off of asking to start but that sounds like a lot when you are talking about $35,000 or so.

No way you will get 20-30 percent off the sticker price. Boat biz is nothing like the car industry. There is not that much profit to be made. Now sometimes dealers will sell boats just above cost at the end of the year to make room for the new year models. The price you mentioned is the going price for the 214 depending on options of course.

I work at a marine dealership that sells nautic star...... just being honest. Sure it don't hurt to ask but don't count on it.

Look around. Lousiana sportsman has a lot of advertisements. There are some 2014's they are trying to get rid of listed at about 20% off msrp.

Also keep in mind that nautic star requires you to bring the boat to the selling dealership for any warranty. Best to buy local so you will not have to haul the boat back and forth if you buy the boat out of town for a cheaper price. I'm not sure what blazer does but something to keep in mind.

I am sure nautic would make an exception if the boat is bought out of state.

I came across this site during my recent search. It doesn't list either of the companies you were talking about but it may give you an idea of how extreme the mark up is. I have no idea if this info is legit so take it for what it is. I researched boats for 6 months and was headed towards buying new. In the end decided "slightly used" was the way to go. New boat prices are insane and list prices are with no options. Too many people buy new, install all the accessories, and upgrade after they have been in it a year. The guy who had the boat I just bought before me added 20K worth of options, I picked it up for 15K under sticker w/o options. It had 60 hours with transferrable warranty. I know that's not what you asked, just my .02. I would say 5k off a 35k boat would be a starting point but you will most likely get 2.5-3k during the winter. You may have better luck trying to work options in if you choose to go that route although most dealers pull your eyes out when it comes to installing accessories.
