Model 1873 Winchester made in 1882. 44-40 was the most popular caliber at the time as the Colt Single Action Army could also be had in that same caliber and you only needed to carry one caliber/cartridge for both guns. 38-40 was a close second but not as popular. The .45 Colt cartridge had also come out (more powerful) but there were no popular repeating rifles chambered for it.
