I remember regular gas being $.18 a gallon back in the mid 60's and that was for full service....... windows washed, oil & radiator levels checked, tires inspected and pressure checked and the car floor swept clean.

I remember visiting relatives in Texas back in the mid sixties, our gas prices were about 32 cents for regular, while in Texas it was 28 cents. Back then you could still find a grade called "ethyl". Could drive all week on $5.

I started driving in 1971. The summer of '72 the gas stations in our town had price wars and gas never got over 21 cents. I could fill the Chevy station wagon and get a quart of oil added by the attendant for $5.25.

Wonder what full service gas would cost now?

I remember driving from Sulphur to Orange for .13 gas wars. I also remember thinking I would never be able to afford another trip to Colorado when gas hit .50 a gallon. I have since gone to Colorado on almost $4.00 a gallon diesel.

The "ethy" was the short name for gasoline that contained Tetra-Ethyl Lead. This product was an additive to gasoline to boost the octane. The Ethyl Corporation [they had a big plant in Baton Rouge] and Dupont were the main suppliers, but it was very very toxic and environmentally unfriendly.

Putting "lead" in gasoline was phased out back in the 80's [I think].
