I bet a couple ice chest full of shad "chopped" up in a blender or food processor would work just as good.

I had a friend tell me that someone he knew used frozen shad for chum.

They would fill up gallon milk jugs with shad and then fill it with water and freeze it. Then when ready to go fishing, they would cut 3" hole [maybe 2 holes] in the plastic. Then tie a line to the jug and let it float in the water. Tie the line off to the boat and as the ice melts the "chum" is slowly released.

This method sounds good to me but I have never seen it done.

I would like to fill up a couple of ice chest with shad to use as fertilizer in the garden...... but the wife is not too keen on this idea.

you mean what kind of bucket or what kind of bait?

alphaman 02-20-2015 07:11 PM

Both.

What are you trying to chum ? For snapper, I just throw the chum off the side of the boat. Use cut up frozen pogies mostly. also spanish sardines. I keep it in the box till im ready to start cutting and then sometimes I'll put it in a 5 gal bucket before I toss it.
